Vectorworks, Inc., a subsidiary of AEC industry giant Nemetschek Group, has collaborated with Entourage Pro to release an Insights Tech Report on the importance of AI, VR, and sustainability trends in the future of the event design and production industry.

Vectorworks is a global leader in software solutions for the design and production of live and filmed events, including theater, music, television, and film production. Its software solutions help plan, detail, coordinate, and simulate live entertainment.

Event Industry Report

Entourage Pro, the first verified global network of freelance crews in the event production sector, created the “Insights Technology Report” specifically for Vectorworks. This report examines present trends, obstacles, and prospects related to technology in the industry, particularly emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and sustainable practices.

The new report highlights AI, VR, and sustainability trends in the event design industry.

The study utilizes survey data from several hundred event professionals in 37 countries. The information underscores how technology is influencing the future of live events, affecting everything from design processes to sustainability efforts. The participant pool reflects deep expertise within the industry. Nearly half of all participants have more than 20 years of experience, with 35 percent working on more than 100 shows annually.

Gradual integration of more advanced technologies is emphasized in the report’s findings, which include:

  • AI is increasingly integral to the industry in enhancing design processes despite facing technological and ethical concerns.
  • VR and augmented reality (AR) are employed for immersive experiences but are limited by costs and the need for training.
  • Sustainability is a rising and renewed focus, although energy-efficient practices often face financial and client-related challenges.

“Technology is not just transforming the event production landscape; it is redefining how we envision and execute our projects,” said Vectorworks Chief Marketing Officer Jeremy Powell. “This report sheds light on the critical role of AI and VR tools, as well as sustainable practices, emphasizing both the industry’s opportunities and challenges. By investing in education and resources, we can empower professionals to fully embrace these innovations fully, ensuring a more creative and environmentally responsible future for event production.”

AI

The report suggests that AI technologies are being tentatively embraced. 78 percent of respondents have not yet adopted the technology while 68 percent say they use it sometimes. ChatGPT is the main engine used.

AR/VR Hype

When it comes to augmented or virtual reality only 20 percent of respondents have actually integrated VR tools into their workflows. While the technology is lauded and recognized for its potential, several barriers must be addressed to fully unlock its full capabilities. These related to a lack of knowledge, training, and technology limitations.

Sustainable Practices

A substantial portion of respondents (84 percent) indicated that they incorporate sustainability into their work at a “somewhat” to “extremely” high level. Clients and artists are increasingly advocating for sustainable practices.

The most sought-after sustainable practices include energy-efficiency lighting (64 percent), waste reduction (52 percent), and the use of recycle materials (42 percent). Despite half of participants citing sustainability in their more recent projects, there is widespread barriers including general lack of concern and budgetary issues thwarting efforts.
