The 3D Commerce Initiative has become a Khronos Working Group and there is a new call for participation.
3D Content Poised for Mass Retail Explosion
Launched as a Khronos Exploratory Group in April 2019, 3D Commerce is now an official working group under Khronos governance.
This group is created to align the industry for streamlined, consistent 3D content created for consumption. The group now includes more than 70 industry-leading companies—from retailers to technology vendors to manufactures. The goal is to create a consensus on what standardization activities are most urgently required for ubiquitous 3D commerce.
According to experts and industry, 3D content is set to explode in retail environments and customer experiences. Virtual (reality) representations of products will be everywhere (eg: ads, search results, etc), in stores, online and on devices.
Retails and industry acknowledge that 3D is a powerful merchandising tool but not all content can be experienced across all devices in a consistent, high-quality manner. This bifurcates the 3D merchandising industry and diminishes the quality of customer experiences. The 3D Commerce Working Group is bringing together industry companies from production to consumption of 3D content to better align retailers and content creators and make experiencing 3D virtual products consistently viewable no matter how they are viewed. Any company is welcome to participate in the working group.
