Blender News

The open-source 3D software suite, Blender, has won the inaugural Open Source Graphics Software Award Category in the 2010 Open Source Awards. The Open Source Software Award is a new category introduced to the Award this year, featuring various different types of Graphic Application software.

While Blender took the top honor with open source in the graphics category GIMP took the first runner up position while open source SVG graphics editor, Inkscape, took the second runners up category.

01 - Blender - the world's top open-source 3D software suite. Runs on Mac, Windows and many other operating systems.

In other Blender news Blender 2.55 beta was released in early November. Blender is a very accomplished 3D production software suite and is fully open-source. Managed by the Blender Foundation, Blender supports 3D modeling, rigging, rendering and animation. It also supports UV unwrapping, shading, physics and particles, realtime 3D game creation, and image and compositing. Supported platforms include: Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Mac OS X Universal Binary, Linux PowerPC and Linux i386, FreeBSD Unix, SGI Irix, and Sun Solaris on Sparc, an impressive array of the world’s top platforms.

Blender is very capable as we noted above. There is an impressive gallery showing the products of Blender and in one particular note we’d like to draw your attention to the animated short film Sintel, produced in 2010 by the Blender Foundation. It is quite nice. Click here.
