Tidbits: IKEA planner, Solidworks-Autodesk and Filemaker news

Mac CAD and 3D News: We have a new story on IKEA’s new IKEA Planner 3D software for the consumer and home owner; plus news on FileMaker Pro 10 and the battle Royale between Autodesk and SolidWorks over the term DWG.

IKEA Planner for Windows – Mac version coming

Okay so at the moment this app is for Windows only but anyone with a virtualization environment on their Intel-based Macs can give this consumer-level 3D design application a whirl. It’s called IKEA Planner and it is a simple 3D room design tool. IKEA apologizes for the lack of a native Mac version on this page and says “does not yet run on the Macintosh operating system.” So the new IKEA Planner appears to be headed over to the Mac.

IKEA Planner comes with the ability to load into your room design IKEA furniture and items, complete with price information. Then your design is saved up to the IKEA Server so when you enter the store something magical happens…but we don’t know what? Clearly IKEA needs to explain this better on its website.

Autodesk and SolidWorks Make Legal Progress

For those of you Mac CAD and 3D users out there following this strange lawsuit, this (new?) site called CAD/Court says the two companies have made progress in their suits and counter suits. To refresh memories…this suit is over the use of the term “DWG” in SolidWorks’ marketing literature and the general fight over the validity of trademarking a term that is a standard abbreviation that means “drawing” within all engineering and design industries where CAD touches.
