Apple’s iMac Pro isn’t even shipping and workstation rival BOXX has begun to tear it apart, calling it “last year’s technology.”
At this year’s SIGGRAPH show returned to Los Angeles, the show gained momentum in the midst of the burgeoning VR/AR explosion happening across various 3D industries as well as foundational shifts happening at the developer level as game engines grow more important and low-level graphics APIs bloom further. Lurking in the background of this year’s SIGGRAPH is AMD’s resurgence as well as Apple’s promised return to pro markets at the workstation level.
There were great reasons long ago for Jobs’ four-quadrant product matrix, but Apple’s users today demand a continuous and overlapping spectrum of compute options that span device thinking categories from “appliance” to “configurable tool.”
Apple has a chance to crush it in the Architecture market, but only if they provide the right features in both the new iMac aimed at pros and the next Mac Pro super machine.
