The Lenovo ThinkStation P620 marks a new generation of workstation computing, says the heir to IBM’s legendary computer line. This week the company launched the world’s first professional workstation with AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ PRO CPUs.

As the first and only professional workstation powered by AMD’s brand new Ryzen Threadripper PRO processor, the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 brings to market unprecedented levels of power, performance, and flexibility in a single socket CPU platform.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO packs 64 cores, making the ThinkStation P620 the world’s first and only 64 core professional workstation. This is the only 64 core workstation platform in existence—a new industry standard.

The world’s most powerful workstation and industry first with AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO, offering 64 cores and 4 GHz power.

AMD Threadripper PRO processors deliver to market clock speeds up to 4.0 GHz, 128 lanes of PCIe 4.0 bandwidth, and 8-channel memory support. Before the emergence of the AMD Threadripper PRO processor, the world’s high max core count single CPU system could deliver 18 cores, while the highest dual-processor system could support 56 cores. The new workstation by Lenovo unlocks a new era of single-CPU computing, enabling users to achieve seamless 8K streaming in real-time, reduced render times, ultra-fast simulation solving, quick assembly rebuilds, and smooth interactivity with 3D assets all without scaling to a more expensive dual-socket system.

On-Premise Enterprise Features

The ThinkStation P620 offers users flexible GPU configurations, faster memory, quicker storage transfer speeds, and 10GB of built-in Ethernet—a new standard in connectivity.

The workstation includes support for up to two Nvidia Quadro RTX 8000 cards or four Quadro RTX 4000 cards, standard-bearers in workstation graphics processing. It also supports up to 1TB of memory and 20TB of storage. It is also the first and only workstation available today with PCIe Gen 4 offering twice the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0.

AMD collaborated with Lenovo to create a custom-designed heat sink to marry with Lenovo’s innovative air-cooled fan system.

“Our customers rely on us to deliver professional-grade solutions that are powerful, but nimble enough to be customized as their needs change and evolve,” says Rob Herman, General Manager, Workstation and Client AI Business Unit, Lenovo. “One of the challenges for IT departments we’ve seen is the push to try new technologies before they’ve been vetted—lacking enterprise-grade features, certifications and security, and support. We’ve worked closely with AMD, ensuring the ThinkStation P620 removes all these barriers and gives users the support they need.”

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO processor offers advanced security features at the silicon level. This includes AMD Secure Processor, validating code before execution to help ensure data and application integrity; AMD Memory Guard, which enables fully memory encryption to help protect sensitive data against advanced physical attacks should a PC be lost or stolen.
