WWDC 2015: Reviewing the Apple Design Award winners

Architosh takes a tiny tour on some of the Apple Design Award winners at this year’s Apple WWDC 2015 conference for its developers, including students and student winners, working worldwide.

Every year at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) the company celebrates the best work being done by its legions of developers—now on three unique but related platforms in OS X, iOS and the new watchOS for Apple Watch. Below are some of our favorite winners worthy of attention.

Reviewing Apple Design Award Winners

Shadowmatic (iOS)

Shadowmatic is a simple game wherein you rotate abstract 3d objects in space so that a spotlight shining on them projects a shadow silhouette on the wall in a recognizable shape. Apple called it “an ornately crafted and imaginative puzzle game…” We think the graphics on this app are particularly strong.

Robinhood (iOS and watchOS)

First off, super creative name for a financial app! Robinhood is a free stock-trading app for your iPhone and Apple Watch. There are two main compelling reasons to love this app. Firstly, it lets you trade stocks for free. Secondly, the app is beautifully done and gives your Apple Watch a time-sensitive purpose. Sell and buy stocks from your wrist!

Affinity Designer (OS X)

A state of the art Mac app that has value to Architosh readers for sure. Move over Adobe! This app has been on our radar for many of the reasons it deserves top honors from Apple. Completely modern OS X developer—64-bit, multi-core, Grand Central Dispatch, OpenGL, CoreGraphics and Force Touch on trackpads.

03 - Fantastical 2 is an Apple Design Award winner for WWDC 2015.

Fantastical 2 (OS X, iOS, webOS)

This is what’s its all about—a stunning solution over all of Apple’s platforms. Fantastical 2 is a much hailed, full-featured calendaring app designed to replace your current calendar solution (whatever that may be). Although I don’t have an Apple Watch yet, I do have Fantastical 2 deployed across a range of Apple devices. It takes a bit of exploration but one will quickly love the powerful ways one can scroll across the UI/UX.
