Apple's new AppleScript Studio delivers on Architosh ideas

Over two years ago this site published a series of articles on an idea. A really good one -- or so we believed! And many others did as well. In fact, we think Apple believed it too. So much so that they went out and built this great idea. We called it CocoaCard! They call it AppleScript Studio. (All of the CocoaCard and iDeveloper articles are listed at the bottom of this article.)

The CocoaCard Articles

The CocoaCard dream could be summed up as "programming for the rest of us". It wasn't necessarily meant to supplant professional C and Java-based software programming but a way in which advanced non-programming Mac users could easily and affordably enter a programming ramp in which they could leverage their Mac skills toward the goal of writing simple applications.

CocoaCard was also an idea about connecting Apple's core software technologies together and harnessing the creative interaction between a number of key applications. Those core technologies were: AppleScript, QuickTime, and OpenGL. The key applications were: AppleWorks, FileMaker Pro, iMovie and QuickTime Pro. Using the imagined CocoaCard users could easily develop solutions which brought together these core apps with Apple's core technologies. CocoaCard would be the app which made this happen.

In many respects CocoaCard was a new type of HyperCard -- a visual programming environment that utilized multimedia technologies and database concepts. The reaction to the CocoaCard idea articles was phenomenal, including supportive enthusiasm from a legendary Macintosh programming guru.(see the articles for more.)

Apple's AppleScript Studio - A CocoaCard App

Part of the reason CocoaCard was called "Cocoa" was because it was literally a application built using Cocoa API's as well as an application which allowed you to visually access and develop using Cocoa API's. 'Visual' is a key word. The idea was likened to visual HTML environments like Dreamweaver and GoLive.

AppleScript Studio totally delivers on the CocoaCard dream. The new software is actually an application development tool for Mac OS X. So if you want to make your own OS X apps but don't know Objective C, Java or C languages, no sweat! You can use AppleScript instead.

AppleScript Studio is also free at the moment via the Apple Developer Connection. You need to become a free online member (at minimum) to get the developer tools of which AppleScript Studio belongs.

You can join ADC here and sign up for the Online program, which is free! Once joined you can obtain AppleScript Studio. To read more about AppleScript Studio click here.
