Siggraph: Notes
from the show floor
One of these days we will attend Siggraph directly, and hopefully
when that happens Apple will actually be in attendance. If Apple
is going to ever be taken seriously in the 3D world this show is
one they must not miss.
Notes on 3D Graphics
3D Nature is in booth 1066 showing their new World
Construction Set, version 5. Famous for its use in landscape
and terrain modeling, including use by more golf course architects,
WCS v.5 has a new interface and other user-demanded features.
Adobe is in booth 1637 and will most likely be showing their new
3D Web application, Atmosphere,
which is in the works.

Notes on Hardware Items
3DLabs' new card for Apple
Cinema Displays running off PC's has been covered in a number of
news sites. Perhaps the big news in
the hardware arena came from ATI with their new video cards.
Matrox Graphics Inc. was on
hand. Aside from making numerous cards for PC's the company makes
a special dual-head graphics card for the Mac G4. Ever wanted to
try out a SGI IRIX machine but didn't have the cash for a new one?
XS International Inc may
be your best friend. The company specializes in new and refurbished
SGI, Sun and Intergraph workstations and servers for the high-end
markets. Check out their website for some of the workstations you
can get for small dollar. Like an SGI O2 system R5000 processor
running IRIX for just $1200.
