Shootout: G4
tower stacks up well against PC's
Architosh reader Ed M. sent us a link to the AAPLTalk
site's Desktop Tower Price/Performance Shootout! chart. It's
actually very interesting to compare systems in this chart from
Apple rivals DELL, Gateway, HP, Compaq and Sony.
For under $2,000US, all of these vendors pit the best systems for
the dollar against each other. Guess who wins?
Apple. But only by a hair. But there are some factors that were
not included which if they were the Apple system would have trounced
the other systems. Here is what should have been added to make the
scoring categories more complete:
- Included video-editing software (Mac wins
with best of breed iMovie)
- Included digital music playing software
(could the Mac win here too?)
- Included HomePage Software and Services
(iTools)
- Included iDisk (unique Mac only features)
- Included PDA synchronizing software
By adding these items we would be evaluating the systems as "digital
hubs" in our "digital lifestyles", in addition to
just their hardware features. If PC advocates wanted to chime in
with software availability they could but it should be category
based. In which case the unavailability of things like Final Cut
Pro would make the Mac the clear leader in the video editing world.
And the availability of a top app should weigh more than the total
availability of choices.
