MWNY: Shockwave
takes to 3D, new partners sign on
We sat through a demonstration of the new 3D capabilities of Shockwave
and Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio. What's impressive about this
direction isn't the 3D technology per se but the ubiqituous nature
of the Shockwave Player plugin.
Cross-platform is a key factor for us Mac users as well because
many newer Web 3D technologies have put Mac users on the back burner
with later releases or even no releases. What's nice about Macromedia
is that on the client and workstation side of things the Mac has
parity with the PC.
Widespread Support of 3D in Shockwave Studio
In a nut shell, there is a new Web 3D format supported in Director
8.5 Shockwave Studio and 3D and modeling/animation developers have
a few different options to get their content supported. By exporting
out to Shockwave 3D format developers can utilize the Shockwave
Player as a 3D Web delivery mechanism.
3D Partners
In addition to folks like Alias/Wavefront and the Ashlar guys,
Macromedia and Intel—working together—have gathered a
large and diversified list of 3D partners. Here are a few with support
for Macintosh or Mac OS X:

As we learn more about this direction in Web 3D we will publish
more indepth reports, with a particular emphasis on defining as
many pipeline options as possible for Web 3D utilizing the Shockwave
3D format.
