Vectorworks Chief Technology Officer, Steve Johnson explains the rationale behind these Design Days:

“This worldwide Design Day series is a dynamic opportunity for us to connect and engage with the diverse Vectorworks community in the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia. From New York to Sydney, we look forward to welcoming our customers to hear from industry experts on the latest developments and features and from remarkable design professionals making the most of Vectorworks and designing without limits.”

Features

Vectorworks is keen to demonstrate its product’s array of new and improved features. For example, the new Vectorworks 2024 offers its users an updated and modernized user interface. Consequently, this means Vectorworks is more efficient and easier to customize.

It also offers BIM (building information modelling) tools that cater to the specific needs of architects. Users will additionally find improved geometry for thresholds and sills, so they fit better with wall closures. Furthermore, customers see more options to control interior and exterior environmental conditions.

Consequently, gaps around doors and windows can be controlled for each side of the opening. Moreover, door handing has been standardized to allow for more detailed geometry. Additionally, materials can now be assigned to doors and windows, guaranteeing accuracy and consistency in visual representation and reporting.

Insights

In addition to exploring the technical details concerning the upcoming software release, attendees will gain valuable insights from customer success stories. They can also network with like-minded designers and the Vectorworks senior leadership team as they present the Future of Vectorworks roadmap.

After being dormant for nearly two decades, this fall the Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building (AIB) will temporarily be reopened with an exhibition all about the future. In celebration of the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary, the AIB’s reopening “FUTURES” exhibition will display a vast array of ideas, artworks, technologies, and interactives that take a glimpse into humanity’s next chapter.

FUTURES

FUTURES will look at various types of futures that unite and inspire humanity as well as strategies that solve real-world problems now, in the future and even ideas from past generations.

A rendering of Autodesk’s Co-Lab display at the FUTURES Exhibition coming to the Smithsonian’s Arts + Industries Building (AIB) this fall.

The exhibit will look at the future of travel, the future of burials, the future robots, and the future of design. Autodesk has co-developed an exhibit that enables a first-of-its-kind collaborative design experience, marrying collaborative human (occupant) participation with artificial intelligence (AI). The installation is called “Co-Lab” and will invite visitors to co-create their own city of the future.

Autodesk’s generative design technology will be featured in the exhibit in two ways. Firstly, the technology which taps the power of AI was used to create the interactive display design itself. Secondly, it will be used by visitors as they collaborate together along with AI to design a city block.

Autodesk says the installation incorporates Autodesk’s latest generative design technology. Visitors collaborate with each other along with AI to design a sustainable urban block. Each visitor will take on a different persona (from the developer, mayor, ecologist, etc.) and be motivated by specific goals and situational input factors. For example, inputs like availability of green space, distance from public services, and low carbon transportation, are just a few. Autodesk’s generative design technology today in its own applications provides accessibility to non-programmer user interfaces like simple sliders. In Co-Lab visitors can alter input levels (eg: the amount of green space) on situational factors and thereby explore the visualization of trade-offs necessary to achieve certain outcomes.

Real-time technology is growing at an accelerated pace and completely transforming workflows across numerous industries—from VFX, AEC, AI, gaming and many more. In light of the unprecedented growth, technology visionaries have united to launch a brand new conference focused exclusively on real-time technologies.

RTC 2020

Somewhat unique to this conference, the event takes place simultaneously in two locations, Paris and New York, running from 6-7 April 2020.

Real-time technologies are advancing so quickly that industry has developed a new dual-city annual conference just for real-time technologies and their impacts on industries.

“Real-time technology is having a major impact on several industries, but there is a natural tendency for experts to remain within their own communities – that’s where the RealTime Conference comes in,” said Jean-Michel Blottière, former executive director of FMX and co-founder of the RealTime Conference. “Our goal is to bring together real-time experts, innovators, creatives, and decision-makers from these different communities to find unexpected connections and to help shape the industry for years to come.”

The RealTime Conference was founded by industry professionals from companies with a history of innovation — including Weta Digital, DreamWorks, THX, Dassault Systèmes, and TellTale Games to name a few — with the shared goal of uniting the real-time community across multiple industries.

RTC 2020 will feature big-name industry speakers, including some that Architosh speaks to regularly, including:

Marc Petit — General Manager, Unreal Engine, Epic Games

Sébastien Deguy — Vice President, 3D and Immersive, Adobe

Asa Kalam — Executive Director at Walt Disney Imagineering

Adam Chernick — Associate, Interactive Visualization, SHoP Architects

and many others… (speakers page found here)

Key sponsoring companies and names that Architosh readers know well include: Intel, Epic Games, Adobe, Foundry, HP, Rewind, and others. Over 45 speakers from companies like Epic Games, Google, Facebook, Activision, Unity, and others will inform attendees.

“Real-time technology has a transformative quality, and in many ways, it is still in its infancy,” said Manny Francisco, CTO of the RealTime Conference. “Our goal is to create a forum where pioneers can exchange ideas with peers and help others plan the next two, three or even ten years of their business.”

Registration and Pricing

Tickets for both New York and Paris are on sale now, and include single day, full conference, VIP and student passes. Non-student attendees that purchase their tickets before January 31, 2020, will receive the “Super Early Bird” discount, granting 30% off of all packages. Starting on February 1, registrants will receive a 20% discount, which will remain in effect until February 28. Throughout March, registrants will receive a 10% discount.

Single-day passes offer access to all sessions – including keynotes, lectures, and workshops in either location, as well as the live, real-time transatlantic demos. Full conference passes grant access to all sessions on both days, along with “Meet the Experts” round-tables on topics like virtual production, volumetric capture, metaverse planning, business models and several others.

Limited numbers of VIP passes are available and feature access to private events, including an exclusive dinner for New York attendees and a cruise on the River Seine in Paris. VIP attendees will also be able to meet one-on-one with presenters in the private “Speakers’ Lounge” and continue the conversation.

This is our last report on the 2018 Vectorworks Design Summit, which took place in Phoenix, Arizona back in November.

The Vectorworks Design Summit takes place at a different location every year. Typically these have been urban locations but the event in 2018 chose the desert of Arizona instead. And it was the farthest event towards the west coast as well.

Event Photos with Notes

I heard from Vectorworks staff that almost immediately after the Design Summit in 2017 a team selected a short list of potential locations for the 2018 conference. Narrowing down the list the small team flew out to each location to check out the facilities up close and evaluate the suitability for the conference.

The Location

The location for the 2018 Design Summit was breathtaking—the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass. How is that for a name? About 30 minutes from the Phoenix International Airport, Wild Horse Pass is secluded and tucked away into the Sonoran Desert and celebrates the Gila River Indian heritage and culture. The architecture of the hotel represented this with native-inspired forms and materials and beautiful ceiling murals celebrating native history.

01 – The front entrance to the hotel had beautiful log timber elements.

02 – The view from a typical Wild Horse Pass hotel room.

While not a masterwork of contemporary architecture reflecting a native past—that kind of work attendees would see at the Antoine Predock design keynote talk—the hotel had a lux southwest feel that quickly shifted attendees minds towards something new in learning about Vectorworks, networking with peers, and taking hands-on training classes.

Taking time off to attend software user conferences isn’t always easy but this particular type of location—and located deeper into the colder late Fall—makes for an ideal short family get-away. I met several attendees who brought their spouse or family along for an extended stay before or after the event. The hotel had fantastic pools, nature walks, horse riding, tennis, and two beautiful resort golf courses with excellent clubhouse lunch fair. Some attendees went architecture touring in nearby downtown Phoenix and to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West school.

Getting Larger

This year I was told that the show slightly exceeded its record attendee levels from recent shows, with more than 600 Vectorworks professional and student end-users, consultants and trainers in attendance.

03 – The Day 1 keynote was packed into a larger conference hall. Over 600 attendees this year came to educate themselves, gain AIA credits and more.

This year I was hoping to see more users from Asia at the event, being that it was a bit closer than an East Coast location. That was not the case, as I only saw a few attendees from Japan. In order to get those Japanese customers to come to the Design Summit, the event may have to be much closer, like Vancouver or Alaska. Why emphasize Japan?

03 – Dr. Biplab Sarkar, CEO of Vectorworks discussing the global market for Vectorworks users.

Take a look at the next image. During the keynote Vectorworks CEO, Dr. Biplab Sarkar put up a slide that showed their global markets. Asia has roughly 30% of their global users and most of them are in Japan. However, as learned in a post-keynote interview reported here, major-sized users are also in countries in south-east Asia. Asia has 10 percent more share of users than all of the Americas combined. After the United States, Germany is the next largest country market for Vectorworks users, followed by the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

Third Parties at Design Summit

A typical Design Summit begins one day before the first day with an evening cocktail event for networking and strategizing with colleagues. This networking takes place in the long gallery circulation spaces directly in front of the major presentation halls. During the conference, these spaces are also where a small third-party exhibition space is held. Between major talks, folks can mingle and check out third-party applications, services, and hardware.

04 – Happy Hour event with third-party exhibitors presenting wares.

In the past, there have been a good dozen third-party companies setting up for the Design Summit, but this year the number was smaller, which was surprising given the attendance numbers at over 600. Canon, Bluebeam, and ALLPLAN, and Transoft’s AutoTURN were all present, with a few others.

Speaking of third-parties, this year’s keynote showed that Vectorworks continues to expand features in their solutions by tapping into third-party connected apps. This was also reiterated on in my interview with the executive team during the event and already reported here. During the technology keynote, Dr. Sarkar noted several key third-party integrations. For Vectorworks 2019, Transoft’s AutoTURN Online was a big one. The solution is a vehicle turning analysis solution that helps architects and planning professionals test parking lots and drives and delivery bays for workable layouts for real vehicle operations. Transoft is actually a major software company working across multiple transportation domains, including commercial aviation.

05 – Transoft’s AutoTURN is a simulation app that is integrated into Vectorworks 2019.

Deersoft was also mentioned at the Design Summit. The German software company based in Berlin makes a product that is called Braceworks, and a version of that software is a comprehensive “add-on” to Vectorworks Spotlight. It should be noted how important Spotlight is becoming to the Maryland-based subsidiary of the Nemetschek Group. The CAD market for the live events, film and theater industry is reportedly massive. And Vectorworks Spotlight according to ComputerWorks in Germany is the “undisputed standard.” It is the undisputed leader in just Germany? Perhaps. But Germany is the second largest enterprise software market in the world after the United States and it may likely be the second largest in the CAD verticals. Check out the video on Vectorworks Spotlight below (in German).

A few final comments about the 2018 Vectorworks Design Summit. In the image below it is important to point out that the AEC industry is now accounting for just over 50% of all revenues and users for Vectorworks. While initially, the Landmark product was the product that would drive new users, Spotlight has completely overtaken that industry segment. (see image 06).

It should be noted that this year at the conference there were more sessions and users (in attendance) focused on Spotlight than any year in the past, according to sources at the event. Vectorworks Spotlight growth is clearly a strong growth driver and it will continue to make this conference more multi-dimensional over time.

“Imaginary Worlds: How technology is transforming the art of visual effects” is taking place at Design Night at The Autodesk Gallery in San Francisco on 1 February 2018.

Imaginary Worlds

The invite reads: “In entertainment, the lines between the physical and the digital worlds are increasingly blurring, thanks to today’s production technology. From robot-controlled cameras to performance and reality capture, these sophisticated tools are helping to create computer-generated imagery that, when coupled with live-action shots, transports audiences to fantastical places that often feel real.”

Attendees to Design Night will hear from Kevin Baillie, co-founder and VFX supervisor at Atomic Fiction, who’ll share a behind-the-scenes look into the visual effects of hit TV show “Stranger Things.”

Nemetschek Vectorworks Inc “Art Nouveau and its Influence on Architecture” webinar, presented by Steve Alden, AIA, Architect at Nemetschek Vectorworks, will take place on May 28th at 2:00 (EDT) online http://www3.vectorworks.net/ArtNouveau.

It will look at the lives and legacy of two Art Nouveau masters, Victor Horta and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. While distinctly different in their responses to the Art and Crafts movement, both men made important contributions that are universally acknowledged.

Victor Horta: The Original “Steam Punk”

Belgian architect and designer Victor Horta is widely acknowledged as a leading figure in the Art Nouveau style that dominated late 19th century Europe. His fluid and organic interpretations of rigid technology bending to the will of the artist’s hand left a subtle but distinctive mark on an entire generation of international architects who came later, including Frank Lloyd Wright.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Unflinching Foe of Artifice

Scottish architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh had a profound influence on European design as the Art Nouveau movement struggled to hold its ground against the overwhelming power of mass production and the strict demands of economic expediency. The popular acceptance of “Japonism” fostered a new worldview imported from Asia and provided Mackintosh with the perfect tools to balance economy, elegance, utility, and form.

Learning Objectives

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

Discuss the reasons why the Art Nouveau movement flourished in response to the Industrial Revolution.

Explain the significance of Victor Horta and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in the Art Nouveau movement and how their philosophies influenced future designers.

Recognize the distinctive characteristics of the Art Nouveau style and identify other practitioners from the era.

Differentiate between the Art Nouveau style and the larger Arts and Crafts movement.

“Four Japanese Architects You Should Know” airs July 9th at 2:00 (ET) The webinar is being presented by Steve Alden, AIA, Architect at Nemetschek Vectorworks.

These four architects – Tadao Ando, Kenzo Tange, Toyo Ito and Shigeru Ban – share a common cultural heritage that views the built environment through a distinctly different lens.

Their vision places high value on emotion, experience, introspection, and harmony. It will also take a close look at several projects from each of these acknowledged masters. Discover how the long history of this island nation has shaped the philosophy and creative output of each of these architects and learn how their personal journeys unfold in, sometimes, unexpected ways.

Learning Objectives

Discuss the history of Japan and how the past influences the decisions made by these acclaimed designers.

Recognize the effect of long-established Japanese traditions on contemporary site planning and architectural design.

Explain the philosophical and stylistic differences among these architects.

Evaluate how these four inspirational Japanese designers influence the work of architects from around the world

The 16th annual Congress on the Future of Engineering Software, officially kicks off today in Scottsdale, Arizona. The event, organized by Cyon Research Corporation and its many corporate sponsors, is widely recognized as the premier think-tank event in the CAD and related software industries. The three day informal event features, uniquely, thoughtful discussion centered around intimate briefings and roundtable discussions. In a nutshell, participants—who range from software industry executives, computer scientists, CAD industry experts, analysts and press (Architosh will be covering key announcements remotely)—explore the trends and technologies of engineering software that will drive future innovation.

“We’re excited about this year’s theme, Stepping Back to See the Big Picture. Stepping back to take a broader view is something most do, but only every now and then. COFES has been one of those points on the calendar dedicated to that broad-perspective thinking. But once a year is not enough,” explains Brad Holtz, Cyon Research president and CEO. “Because engineers and software professionals spend the majority of their time getting things done, tightly focused on execution of tasks and plans, their decisions are often made in the narrow context of what is directly in front of them. This year, we are challenging attendees to bring that broader view into their daily decisions. It’s about the bigger picture winning over expediency.”

COFES 2015 Highlights and COFES iOS App

David Brin, futurist, scientist, inventor and author, is the keynote speaker on Friday’s keynote. His keynote will take a look five years down the road. According to Brin, responsible companies and chief engineers must focus on the five year RIO (return on investment).

On Saturday, the keynote will be by Bo Burlingham, an editor at large for Inc. Magazine and a renowned commentator on the nature of business. In his keynote, Burlingham will be discussing key points from his latest book, “Finish Big: How Great Entrepreneurs Exit Their Companies on Top.”

This year’s COFES will also feature findings of a once-in-a-lifetime simulation summit:
The Analysis, Simulation, and Systems Engineering Software Summit (ASSESS), held at the Santa Fe Institute in January 2015. At that summit, seven key issues related to the future of simulation rose to the top, after a discussion that started with 104 issues brought to the table. These seven issues will be presented today, April 16 at COFES.

Also starting today is the seventh annual Design and Sustainability (DaS) Symposium, a unique gathering of leaders within the COFES community who represent diverse industry sectors with strategic interest in software. The goal of the DaS Symposium is to bring sustainability to the forefront of the conversation among software developers and to look for opportunities and issues that may be best served by the industry as a whole, rather than by individual players within the industry. Leaders of the DaS symposium hope to inspire, raise awareness, build relationships and seek sustainable synergies. The bulk of the DaS Symposium will take place on Thursday, April 16, from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM PDT, followed by discussions as part of the general COFES program.

There is a free COFES Player iOS app which readers can get from the Apple App store. To read the full agenda for COFES this year visit this link.

Featuring 20 of the studio’s latest projects, the exhibit provides a glimpse into how the firm works with intense creativity and innovation while developing concepts for new buildings. Architectural innovation is at the core of the firm’s work and in this particular case how building’s can respond to their environments.

An upcoming seminar titled “How 4 Leading Architects Are Winning with Performance-Based Design” is coming up on 15 October 2014. The event is sponsored by Sefaira, an application that was awarded an Architosh 2014 BEST of SHOW award in the Innovation Category (see, Architosh, “Perspectives on the 2014 Architosh BEST of SHOW awards at AIA National,” 10 July 2014).

The callout for the event reads, “Whether they are competing for work, creating the vision, or collaborating with consultants, firms are winning everyday with performance-based design. Our panel of experts will present examples of the benefits of performance-based design and discuss how this approach is impacting different roles throughout their firms.”

Event Details

We believe this event is mostly centered on firms using the Sefaira plugin technology for early-stage analytics in the area of energy design via SketchUp or Revit integration. The discussion will center on:

Understand how performance-based design can help you win more business

Explore how performance-based design can help you deliver better outcomes on your projects by enhancing collaboration across the project team

Discover when and how to employ performance-based design to support enhanced project design and delivery

Learn now to integrate performance into design decisions on real projects

The event will host a live Q&A session with the panel after the panel members have made presentations to address questions:

Panels include:

Ara Massey — Sustainable Designer Manager, SlaterPaull | Hord Coplan Macht

Ilana Judah — Director of Sustainability – FXFowle

Duane Carter – Director of Sustainability and Building Performance — Solomon Cordwell Buenz

Christine Reinders – Mechanical Engineer — CannonDesign

Registration Details

The event takes place 15 October 2014 — 9 AM PDT | 12 PM EDT | 4 PM GMT | 5 PM BST | Click here to register.

This year OfficeUS converted the United States pavilion at the Venice Biennale into a temporary architecture studio. The organizers of the project, Storefront for Art and Architecture, have selected eight (8) designers, two duos and four individual practitioners, to setup shop inside the pavilion and work from there for the five month duration of the show.

The plan is for the designers to produce unspecified architectural projects based on a set of 25 issues—”Best Practices, Trojan Horses, Magical States, and Little Americas,” among them—one for each week of the exhibition. The organizers devised the list while creating a large repository of documents, models and material samples representing some 1,000 projects realized abroad by 200 American architecture firms over the course of the last 100 years. The archive will serve as raw material for the designers’ work.

Designers will be able to use the HP Z420 workstations and HP ZBook Mobile Workstations powered by AMD FirePro professional graphics to design their projects. They will also be able to print to the HP DesignJet T520 ePrinter and display printed material at the exhibit.

The pavilion was presented to the press on the 4th and 5th of June. An opening dinner, which took place at InParadiso included a three course meal inspired by the repository and designed by two of the OfficeUS architects who run the architecture practice Cooking Section. For the dinner, the architects designed specialty table cloths printed on the HP Designjet T520 ePrinter that highlighted the stories that inspired the dishes.
