Visualization professionals have something to smile about. For those who have ventured into game engine space, the good news is that Epic Games has extended its free beta of its new Unreal Studio for a full year. The beta now runs through September 2019.
100,000 Users and Counting
As we noted in our recent Quick Look post, Unreal Studio is aimed at bringing the Unreal Game engine to markets beyond the gaming community, enabling visualization professionals to benefit from the engine’s dynamic and interactive rendering capabilities.
Unreal Studio beta was launched back in March of this year, aiming to bring a shortcut to producing high-quality, real-time, fully immersive visual experiences to enterprise users in architecture, design, and manufacturing.

“The response to Unreal Studio has been incredible – in just a few short months our beta users have tapped Unreal Studio to power amazing projects in automotive, architecture, broadcast, and even medical research,” said Marc Petit, General Manager of Unreal Enterprise at Epic Games. “Recent beta surveys indicate that users importing CAD data from 3ds Max are doubling their productivity—an average efficiency increase of 113%. We want to invest in our users’ success, so we’re extending the free beta period for another year while we continue to add new features and capabilities, giving users more time to explore the benefits of real-time visualization.”

Key features for Unreal Studio, which sadly is only available for Windows at the moment, include:
- Datasmith — This workflow toolkit streamlines the transfer of CAD data into Unreal Engine and includes support for over 20 CAD sources including Autodesk 3ds Max and SketchUp
- Learning Tools — Users can access the free Unreal Engine Online Learning platform with extensive video tutorials and training materials to master Unreal Engine across professional tracks like architectural visualization and industrial design
- Asset Library — Quickly create experiences with access to over 100 substances from Allegorithmic for common architecture and design materials and industry-specific templates
- Support — Beta users have access to one-to-one ticketed support as well as monitored community-driven discussion boards
