Architosh Analysis and Commentary
V-Ray is an interactive-renderer and this was not specifically mentioned in the press materials from AutoDesSys. Interactive-rendering allows the user to do things like move the sun in formZ and then instantly see the results in the interactive render. V-Ray for formZ also supports material overrides which means that the materials from formZ are overwritten by generic or specific V-Ray materials. This is useful for temporarily analyzing lighting as the overrides feature speeds up interactive rendering.
The popularity of V-Ray is undeniable in the architecture community in particular. While other rendering engines and programs abound, Chaos Group’s approach in supporting a multitude of CAD and 3D modeling programs has made it well-known and highly supported. Its hybrid rendering technology (ie: supporting GPU, CPU or GPU+CPU) is cutting edge and its image quality has won the company a technical Academy Award. This new addition will no doubt be well received by loyal formZ users. And it may well entice some non-formZ users to give the program—which ships in three different versions—a good try.
