Vectorworks releases Unity-powered 3D model viewing technology

The latest Vectorworks update in Service Pack 3 offers a significant new set of capabilities for Vectorworks 2022 users. The star item of this latest release is the implementation of the Unity game engine as a platform technology for Vectorworks model distribution viewing experiences.

There are also additional cloud-centric updates, updates to Datasmith file exchange for a direct link to Twinmotion, and much more.

Unity Powered

“Implementing the Unity game engine as a platform for AR, 3D, and web viewing of 3D models enables us to deliver a faster, more robust experience for anyone viewing and navigating 3D designs of any size on the web and through our mobile app, Nomad,” said Vectorworks Director of Product Technology Dave Donley. “We’re excited to bring these innovative updates to our users, providing them with amazing performance boosts for large, complex design models for better presentations and interactive experiences.”

Service Pack 3 for Vectorworks 2022 includes new Unity-powered 3D modeling viewing on web and mobile.

Major re-engineering updates is yielding significantly better experiences on cloud and mobile, including new cloud storage options with Microsoft OneDrive, improved integrations with Google Drive, plus a direct connection of the Nomad mobile app to the iOS Files App. These updates give customers more power and flexibility when working with cloud-stored data, more options for working with existing file structures and saving time with region-specific cloud storage options that will boost file upload and download speeds.

Redshift Render and Twinmotion

As already noted in a previous Architosh report, Maxon’s Redshift renderer technologies will be integrated into Nemetschek Group products, including Vectorworks. With this service pack, customers can now access Redshift render styles while processing renderings through Vectorworks Cloud.

There is now a direct link between Vectorworks and Twinmotion thanks to the Datasmith Direct Link tool. A new Auto Sync option immediately sends changes made to a 3D model in Vectorworks to Twinmotion, eliminating the export/import process, which is a huge time-saver. Furthermore, the Datasmith updates mean that now exports support data and light information for ingestion in the Unreal Engine editor for more data-rich and detailed models.

Other Updates

An update to the MVR workflow in Vectorworks Spotlight and Vision includes using the newest .glTF/.glb file format to both utilize the most up-to-date technology and to meet the latest DIN Spec 15800:2022 standards. This modernization will also broaden the adoption of the MVR file format for a wider opportunity for collaboration and easy project information exchange.

Service Pack 3 also includes several workflow enhancements for ConnectCAD, additional quality fixes for Vectorworks Spotlight and support for PosiStageNet (PSN) in Vision. All quality fixes are detailed in the tech bulletin.
