Epson this week has announced it is shipping two new ultra-sleek wide-format printers for the AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) market. The new SureColor® T-Series plotters—the Epson SureColor T3170 and the SureColor T5170 are 24-inch desktop and 36-inch floor-standing printers, respectively.
SureColor T-Series—New Models Ship
The new plotters deliver commercial-grade reliability, ideal for making blueprints of CAD drawings, line drawings, signage, or color posters. They are optimized for professionals in the low to mid-range CAD printer market and are both wireless printers.
Denn Engineers, a land survey and civil design firm, has been using the SureColor T3170 to create drawings for a variety of customers in the civil engineering market. “We have been incredibly pleased with the SureColor T3170,” said George Shweiri, owner, Denn Engineers. “We were immediately impressed with the size of the printer – the small, sleek form factor allows us to place it directly on someone’s desk, so it’s readily available for use where we’re working. Also, setup was straightforward and quick, and the print quality is sharp – even in draft mode.”
Designed to enhance productivity, the SureColor T3170 and T5170 feature integrated wireless and Wi-Fi Direct® connectivity1 allowing users to seamlessly print from tablets and smartphones2. Leveraging Epson’s new PrecisionCore® MicroTFP® printhead and enhanced Nozzle Verification Technology the SureColor T3170 and SureColor T5170 delivers an A1/D-size print in as fast as 34 seconds3, making it the ideal solution for creating blueprints, line drawings, and posters. High-capacity UltraChrome® XD2 pigment inks deliver durable, vibrant prints with brilliant color and crisp lines.
“Working with feedback from customers and industry design leaders, our goal with the latest SureColor T-Series printers was to create a modern printer that meets both performance and workplace design needs,” said Matt Kochanowski, product manager, professional imaging, Epson America, Inc. “The sleek design coupled with dynamic connectivity and fast print speeds make the SureColor T3170 and T5170 a printer designed for and worthy of being displayed in today’s modern office settings.”
Support and Availability
The SureColor T3170 (MSRP $995) and T5170 (MSRP $2,395) are available now and offer a standard Epson PreferredSM Limited Warranty. The Epson SureColor T-Series printers are designed to work exclusively with Epson UltraChrome XD2 ink*. For more information, visit https://epson.com/surecolor-t-
Denn Engineers received a complimentary Epson SureColor T3170 unit and ink for testing and research purposes.
Architosh Analysis and Commentary
The printers support macOS 10.7.x and higher to the current macOS 10.13.x, along with Windows operating systems version 10, 8.1, 7 and back to Vista and one version of XP. These plotters are very backward capable so users working on older computers running older OSs are in good luck if these machines interest you.
Epson has a support page for Apple users on High Sierra and a page dedicated to Espon and Apple, with the tagline, “An ideal pair.” It has been years since I have had experiences with Epson printers on Mac computers but the company has a long history of superb printers for color photography printing. On this page here Epson says “we ensure that every current Epson printer, ranging from personal desktop printers to large format graphics, is compatible with the latest version of macOS.”
The SureColor T3170 can also be put on a stand that can catch large prints coming out. Both printers support rolls in addition to single-sheet feed options, which can go down to A1 size prints, though most AEC pros would have another printer for smaller printing. Both printers support integrated Wi-Fi Direct® connectivity, so you can put the print anywhere, even remote from your computers if you are using one in a home office setting.
