Sunnyvale, California-based Matterport, an immersive media technology company, has recently announced the introduction of Mattertag™ Content, a creation and delivery system for incorporating rich spatial metadata into Matterport Spaces.
Matterport Spaces are virtual models of real places that can be experienced online from anywhere and are now even more powerful as a tool for communicating in three dimensions.
Matterport Tag Content
The recent release corresponds to the first type of Mattertag Content: Mattertag Posts. Mattertag Posts are spatial annotations that allow users to enhance their Matterport Spaces with text-based comments anchored to a point in the 3D geometry of a Matterport Space. Unlike 2D tags, which require multiple tags of a single item across several images, Matterport tags are viewable from any perspective with just the single tag.
“Mattertag Content vastly expands the amount of information Matterport Spaces can convey about the real world. We refer to this type of information added to an immersive environment as spatial metadata,” said Bill Brown, CEO of Matterport. “Mattertag Content allows our users to annotate points in real space just as they do photos and other digital content; providing viewers with more information, important details, and expanded opportunities for engagement.”
Mattertag Posts turn Spaces into a powerful communication tool across industries as diverse as real estate marketing, and media publishing, and are only the first type of Mattertag Content. In the future, Matterport plans to expand Mattertag Content to include multimedia content associated with any point in 3D space.
When a viewer mouses over or clicks on a Mattertag marker, a billboard appears with a short text description of the tagged feature, object, or area.
Matterport Spaces Making Traction
The Matterport Spaces technology has seen good traction in various industries where immersive virtual experiences quickly add value to all kinds of transaction models. Easy to create and accessible for exploration for anyone with a web browser on desktop or mobile, Matterport has made headway in industries from residential and commercial real estate; business listings; architecture, engineering and construction (AEC); hospitality and retail; and media publishing.
To date more than 100,000 Matterport Spaces have been created in real estate alone and Matterport Spaces have been visited over 28 million times.
“We’re really excited about the opportunities presented by Mattertag Posts and the ability to add additional layers of information and context to our immersive stories,” according to Nathan Griffiths, Interactive Editor at Associated Press. “Our initial experiments have been very promising and we’re looking forward to further exploration.”
“Not only are buyers using online tools to help them decide what homes to tour, we are now seeing more and more people make offers on homes without ever stepping foot inside,” said Molly Braeunig, Senior Manager, Listing Programs at Redfin. “We’re excited that Matterport is enhancing their 3D tours with Mattertag Posts so we can showcase all the features of a listing and help buyers make faster, more informed decisions on whether a home is right for them.”
“Mattertag Posts have taken an already useful tool and made it even better. We are now able to provide potential buyers with key information as they move through the home, increasing their engagement and enhancing the experience,” said David Troyer, Founder of The Troyer Group. “Combining the 3D walkthrough with detailed information about the features and finishes makes for a truly one of a kind online tool.”
