Chaos Group Introduces GPU+CPU Hybrid Rendering in V-Ray 3.6 for 3ds Max

Chaos Group today released V-Ray 3.6 for Autodesk 3ds Max, an update that introduces new hybrid rendering technology that leverages both the GPU and CPU together.

V-Ray Gains GPU+CPU—Improvements in 3.6

The big story in this release is V-Ray’s new hybrid rendering technology. The new tech basically adds CPU support to its existing support for Nvidia-powered GPU renderer. In other words, now both your graphics card and your central processing unit (CPU) can team up to accelerate renders.

“GPU rendering is on the rise, and V-Ray Hybrid solves two important issues that could make it even more popular,” said Vlado Koylazov, Chaos Group co-founder. “It lets artists use all of their existing hardware, and it gives them a fallback solution if they run into GPU RAM limitations. This makes GPU rendering a more practical solution for a much wider audience.”

The added flexibility means if users run into memory limitations that decrease GPU render optimization the CPU on their system can help pitch in to get the rendering work done. It also means that GPU and CPU can effectively team up on the work. It means all of your hardware is being thrown at the render. And for artists, this can mean a very powerful GPU card or many CPU render nodes.

More Than Hardware Acceleration

V-Ray 3.6 for 3ds Max is more than just the GPU+CPU innovations. There are several discreet new features that should be listed below:
