Shared address books for XYZ Ltd staff
and for projects with Microsoft Exchange e-mail server
This would save staff time in creating individual
address books and failed mail deliveries due to incorrect
addresses. Exchange server would hold the central store of
messages and schedules with Outlook being the approved mail
client to take full advantage of Exchange's features: Outlook
for the Mac cannot be purchased separately and is a less developed
version when compared to the PC format. There would be less
connection problems as the Microsoft system does not limit
the number of people access the server at the same time whereas
the current e-mail server is limited to 4 simultaneous connections.
Microsoft is also bringing out a new version of their e-mail
service this year which is rumoured to have significant advantages
for group working.

Novel fixes this. 'Rumoured'? you want
the company to make a major decision based on a rumour?
Sorry, no comment needed on that one. - Steve Moody
Rumours? He believes Microsoft rumours?!
There MUST be a better e-mail server available on the Mac,
I can't believe there isn't. - Chris Mahon
|
I don't know what email
system XYZ company is using but MS Exchange is hardly the
only game in town. Other options include the very popular
QuickMail Office
and QuickMail Pro, and CommuniGate
Pro running on OS X Server or other platforms. And less
we forget, the multi-platform and very successful Intranet
server app called FirstClass
Intranet Server by Centrinity. And then there is one more:
Eudora Mail Server and Clients,
including Eudora Mail for
the Palm Pilot OS.

Windows computers can do anything (except
make the tea)
There are a number of specialist applications
such as digital archiving, document management, project management
and timesheet processing which would be beneficial to XYZ
Ltd. However as these are not mass market products developers
have to target one computer type which is usually Windows:
these types of applications are usually not available on the
Mac.
|
Can't deny there's more software for windows.
But that's irrelevant. What counts is the software you want
to use. However, these sort of Apps are moving towards running
on servers. Any sensible management would be looking to
deploy Java based solutions which are platform independent.
- Philip Bath
I have never found (in over 7 years of
running mixed networks) that if there is a great product
for one platform you can not get something similar for other
platforms. You say 'usually' - I think this means that you're
just not sure or you haven't checked - Matt Wynne
Maconomy
is a cross platform application which can provide timesheet,
accounting, stock control etc. It runs on Oracle and is
very flexible. Maconomy
is the end-to-end business management solution for the service
industries, professional service and project-based organizations.
With a world-wide 600+ customer base, Maconomy is a leading
supplier of solutions across vertical markets in the service
industries. Michael Speechley

The Mac OS has over
18,000 software and hardware products available. Some of the
'best of breed'
products are both Mac
exclusives and Mac-first developed products. Almost all
of today's best software was developed and created on the
Mac first. Take FormZ,
for example. Or better yet, MS Excel. Mac first creations
and still better on the Mac. To look at software
available for AEC visit see our list. If you don't see
it there visit Macintosh
Products Guide (MPG).

Making Such Arguments
The key to these types of arguments, in the form of reports, is
to provide real data to back up your statements. Even more importantly,
to not make outlandish generalizations which are false or mostly
false. Such statements only hurt your credibilitywhich is
exactly what happened to this PC-centric IT fellow.
Closing Comments
There are more comments in the full
report which you can view here. It makes an interesting read;
however, it would have been nice to see more objective data on both
sides of the equation, or at least links to research info yourself.
The good news is, this London firm stayed with the Macintosh after
they realized their new IT person was spreading falsehoods. And
why? As many have pointed out in the past, Wintel-centric IT types
proliferate the complexity that comes with Windows operating systems
because it makes their jobs more secure. Afterall, what busy design
or engineering professional has the time to learn Windows 2000 Advanced
Server? Now how many of these same professionals would rather run
a simpler platform themselves and save the $40k/year salary they
would pay this IT person?
