Mac CAD/3D Tidbits: Strata 3D, Twinmotion 2018, IrisVR and more…

In Brief: The New Twinmotion 2018 Gets First Update

Twinmotion 2018 has won the Silver prize at BATIMAT but it has also released its first update—Twinmotion 2018.1. From a Mac perspective, Twinmotion 2018 is a special moment, marking the first native macOS application in “interactive rendering” segment of the visualization software market. Twinmotion competes in this segment with key competitors like Lumion and Bentley’s LumenRT, neither of which offer a native macOS experience with parity to Windows users.

Burt Rutan and Team Used Ashlar-Vellum’s Cobalt for their Ansari X Prize Reusable Spacecraft Design

According to this page over at Strata, the team at Scaled Composites, led by Burt Rutan, used Cobalt by Ashlar-Vellum. This advanced 2D/3D NURBS-based solids and surface software program is one of the best CAD tools in existence and unfortunately, one of the least known.

It’s worth mentioning Ashlar-Vellum in the context of the Strata-Cobalt deal already mentioned above. The partnership seems an excellent fit between two of the most venerable names in Mac CAD/3D history. While both companies had a wider presence in other markets long ago, today Strata is a market leader in specific sectors of the 3D industry, while Ashlar-Vellum has become highly focused on MCAD, CAID and product design sectors. So it comes as no surprise to learn that Cobalt powered a workflow leading to an X Prize design.
