US-based workstation maker BOXX has announced the new APEX Matterhorn workstation with support for up to four NVIDIA RTX graphics cards.
Matterhorn
The new workstation will be an NVIDIA-Certified System and capable of supporting a variety of workloads, including NVIDIA Omniverse. The system is purpose-built for a variety of rendering, simulation, and “GPU-accelerated compute” workloads.
“Powerful workstations are needed more than ever,” said Bob Pette, VP of Professional Visualization at NVIDIA. “BOXX Technologies’ APEXX Matterhorn delivers the best performance for a variety of workflows.”
APEXX Matterhorn features a single Intel Xeon W-3300 CPU with 12-cores running at 3.5GHz. This is paired with 128GB of DDR4-3200Mhz ECC memory (RAM) and a 500GB M.2 NVMe SSD for storage. The system runs Microsoft Windows 10.
The CPUs are also equipped with 64 processor PCIe lanes for more I/O throughput for networking, graphics, and storage. These PCIe lanes support up to four NVIDIA RTX A6000 GPUs, making the workstation ideal for GPU-intensive workloads across media & entertainment, architecture, engineering & construction (AEC), AI, oil & gas, life sciences, and other industries.
“NVIDIA Omniverse enables designers and artists to work together in real-time with leading software applications, but in order to take advantage of this technology, you need the proper hardware,” said Bill Leasure, BOXX VP of Marketing. “With support for four NVIDIA RTX GPUs, the NVIDIA-Certified APEXX Matterhorn will deliver state-of-the-art performance essential for a wide range of workflows.”
“SIGGRAPH week is the perfect time to showcase APEXX Matterhorn’s dense, high-performance NVIDIA GPU configurations and also highlight its use for Omniverse implementations,” said Leasure. “The concept of the metaverse and collaboration in a virtual world is now reality, so as 3D artists, architects, engineers and other creators connect, BOXX will continue to provide them with innovative, certified hardware solutions that maximize productivity and ROI.”
Other specifications include a liquid-cooled (closed-loop) CPU cooling system, Kensington Security Slot for anti-theft, a 1,600-watt power supply with an 1100 watt GPU power budget.
The maximum configurable memory is 4TB and the system includes 16 DIMM slots with support for 4 GPUs at x16. Other details can be found here.
Availability and Price
BOXX is taking orders for the new APEXX Matterhorn system now. The base price as configured above is 7,120 USD.
Architosh Analysis and Commentary
This is the first BOXX workstation to feature Intel’s newest Xeon chip (Intel Xeon W-3200 series processors). These are the 10nm Ice Lake CPUs rumored to be slated for an upcoming Apple Mac Pro upgrade in 2022. They span from 12-cores (W-3323) to 38-cores (W-3375) and run up to 4.6GHz with Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0. At the moment BOXX is out ahead of everyone with this latest Ice Lake Xeon offering.
