The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO has a boost GHz of 4.2 and supports 128 PCIe lanes. BOXX’s APEXX Everest workstation supports up to four, professional-grade GPGUs: AMD Radeon Pro or NVIDIA RTX (including Ampere, NVIDIA’s second-generation RTX architecture).
APEXX Everest has a capacity of up to 2 TB of system memory and support for multiple hard drive options. IPMI for remote management is also possible. Architosh Analysis and Commentary
The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO processor in this system is the 3995WX model. These chips are based on a 7nm silicon manufacturing process, the first workstation chips in the industry based on this small process. Intel has not reached a 7nm process yet (though their 10nm process is comparable) so Xeon’s competition must rely solely on microarchitecture improvements. AMD’s 7nm chips are manufactured at TSMC after GlobalFoundaries, AMD’s spinoff of its chip-manufacturing, abandoned its 7nm node plans in 2018 to focus on its 14/12nm processes for clients in high-growth markets. Those markets, which include automotive and AI, have exploded in the past few years and will continue to grow.
In the traditional computer market, the value of shrinking silicon manufacturing processes down further and further is beginning to diminish. It is estimated that the race to 5nm and 3nm will only provide power/performance improvements of about 15 – 20 percent. But chip designers like AMD will still take advantage of that to create large powerful chips like this AMD Threadripper PRO which over at Geekbench is showing the top multi-threaded performance benchmark number. At the moment, for absolute supremacy at crunching big numbers in multi-threaded workflows, AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3000 series chips are the performance leader. On top of that, these machines feature PCIe Gen 4 for twice the bandwidth over PCIe 3.0. This new BOXX APEXX Everest workstation has few direct competitors (Lenovo’s ThinkStation P620 happens to be the one that comes to mind).
