Blur Studio is known for their beautiful, incredible photo-realistic work on the movie “Deadpool”, Netflix’s “Love, Death, and Robots” and game cinematics for League of Legends, created the insane visual effects work on “Terminator: Dark Fate”.
Terminator: Dark Fate
AMD’s 3rd Generation Ryzen Threadripper was a major part of the success in Blur’s pipeline, designed to give powerful options for creatives who do art, visualization, and effects with intense simulations to give artists a powerful solution to crunch lots of data at a great price point.
Tim Miller directed “Terminator: Dark Fate” and enlisted Blur’s help to work on the complex visual effects’ shots in the movie. There is a scene where one of the new Terminator models splits in two creating two unique machines. The simulation time to create this effect was optimized and made possible with the new Threadripper. The scene had an entire digital apocalyptic world, complete with photo-realistic details and an inconceivable amount of rendering.
It was this incredible partnership that gave us the terrifying new Terminator that split in two, giving us a new faster foe with double the problems for our protagonists.
This is what immerses us in the vision of director Tim Miller. Something that took 5 minutes, took 5 seconds. The scenes in “Terminator: Dark Fate” had several simulations, elaborately detailed futuristic environments, and digital characters with photo-realistic realism. 75 to 100 layers of effects for a shot. Threadripper 3rd generation allowed for close real-time composites, difficult with Blur’s previous pipeline.
The previous generation of Threadripper 2 was implemented to see how it would perform. When Blur’s new CTO Shawn Walbridge contacted James Knight about Threadripper for Houdini artists to speed up their workflow, Threadripper was 3 times faster with renders than their previous chip.
“When Terminator came around, there were expectations of the visual style on Terminator. AMD and Blur partnered to implement AMD’s Threadripper 3rd Generation into their pipeline” says James Knight, “it allowed Blur to do near, real-time rendering from a CPU, allowing them to do revisions on the desktop of the artists instead of waiting on a server. It really increased productivity instantly.” AMD gave Blur their only samples outside of AMD to create the stunning visuals in “Terminator: Dark Fate”. “It was this incredible partnership that gave us the terrifying new Terminator that split in two, giving us a new faster foe with double the problems for our protagonists.”
3rd AMD Generation Ryzen Threadripper
The 3rd AMD Generation Ryzen Threadripper line-up features a 24 core, 48 thread, and 32 core and 54 thread chip built on the industry-leading 7nm “Zen 2” core architecture boasting up to 88 PCIe® 4.0 lanes and 144MB cache with superb power efficiency.
Ryzen Threadripper is achieving up to 90 percent faster performance over the competition’s top HEDT processor. The new 32 core Ryzen Threadripper 3970x processor offers performance as the most powerful and fastest desktop processor in the high-end desktop market at a reasonable price. AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 3970X offers much better performance specs than the competition for content creatives and artists with insane amounts of computation including:
- Up to 90% faster performance in Cinebench R20
- Up to 47% increased performance in Adobe Premiere
- Up to 49% increased performance in V-Ray
- Up to 43% increased performance in Chromium Release 78 Compile
- Up to 36% increased performance in Unreal Engine
- AMD in tandem of the launch of the Threadripper 3 rd Generation unveiled a new Socket sTX4, optimized for near, and long-term scalability of the Ryzen Threadripper platform. Offering 4 times more bandwidth to the chipset then the previous second-generation Threadripper. It delivers 2.5 times more available bandwidth than the competition for peripherals like SSD or GPU’s. The 3rd Generation Ryzen Threadripper offers the ultimate HEDT platform without compromise.
Conclusion
Artists who create visualizations in today’s world of demanding deadlines with larger-scale expectations can really use AMD’s 3rd Generation Ryzen Threadripper. It is a tool that can help increase productivity at a great price point. The AEC industry is now implementing VR/AR visualization with traditional 3D visualization, so Threadripper 3rd Generation can be a powerful solution for implementing these technologies for your clients.
