Massachusetts-based PTC has announced its latest industrial MCAD product, Creo 4.0 3D CAD software. Creo 4 aims at the Internet of Things (IoT), additive manufacturing, augmented reality, and model-based definition (MBD) with its new features. It includes a vast array of new core modeling enhancements and new functionality to allow designers to create the products of the future.
“I’m really excited for the Creo 4.0 launch. With PTC’s commitment to enabling model-based design, my customers can focus on the 3D model without having to generate any 2D drawings,” said Scott Carmichael, CEO of NxRev, a PTC partner serving customers in Silicon Valley. “PTC’s vision and leadership around augmented reality and ‘Design for IoT’ has a powerful impact on my customers. These customers are developing the next generation of smart, connected products and want to take advantage of these emerging technologies throughout all phases of design.”
Creo 4.0—Designing Smart Connected Products
When all products want to be smart (and not just TVs and cars) the world of product design changes and with it so does the tools needed to put it all together. This is the underlying thesis in the evolution of Creo in version 4.0.
With this latest release of Creo, product designers can design smart, connected products and capitalize on new technologies, such as additive manufacturing and augmented reality.
Key Enhancements By Focus
- Additive Manufacturing — new features enable designers to design, optimize, validate and run a print-check in a single environment. Creo can create parametrically controlled lattice structures, enabling designers to create models that meet multiple objectives and constraints.
- Smart Connected Design — Creo 4 allows designers to pull real-world information back into the design process. This happens through connecting Creo 4.0 3D models to ThingWorx’s sensor model technology. This means virtually prototyping sensor placement and emulate data streams without having to build anything physical. In this PTC is pioneering this type of workflow.
- Augmented Reality — Creo 4.0 supported AR (augmented reality) workflows
- Model Based Definition — MBD enables designers to be more efficient in product development by reducing dependency on 2D drawings. Creo 4.0 enables designers to reduce the errors that result from incorrect, incomplete, or misinterpreted information by guiding and educating designers in the proper application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) information.Creo 4.0 also validates that the GD&T is captured in the 3D CAD model in a fully semantic way, that the model is compliant with ASME and ISO standards, and that it constrains model geometry to enable efficient and error-free downstream use in manufacturing and inspection.
“Realizing the potential of the IoT is not just about getting more product usage data, it means you can use, refine, and analyze that data to design better and smarter,” said Brian Thompson, senior vice president, CAD segment, PTC.
“Creo 4.0 enables designers to replace assumptions in the design process with real-world data to make better product design decisions and along with model-based definition helps give designers a complete digital definition of a product. The enhancements in Creo 4.0 not only enable designers to increase productivity but also help designers leverage the IoT to support their digital engineering journey.”
About Creo 4.0 on Mac OS X and iOS
There has been a reasonable high demand for PTC’s Creo products on macOS (formerly OS X) as well as iOS for mobile. To address this, the company has provided ways for Creo products to work on Mac and other platforms through partnering with virtualization companies such as IBM, Citrix, and Nvidia. Creo Sketch, however, is written natively for iOS.
Creo 4.0 is a series of inter-related applications and the full list consists of many tools. Here is near complete list:
The 3D Creo Tools —
- Creo Parametric
- Creo Direct
- Creo Options Modeler
- Crea Elements/Direct Modeling
The Creo 2D Tools —
- Creo Sketch
- Creo Layout
- Creo Schematics
- Crea Elements/Direct Drafting
And there are several “viewer” applications, including Creo View Mobile for iPad and iPhone and specialty tools like Creo Illustrate for 3D interactive technical illustrations. There are also Creo Simulate tools.

About PTC
PTC has the most robust Internet of Things technology in the world. In 1986 we revolutionized digital 3D design, and in 1998 were first to market with Internet-based PLM. Now our leading IoT and AR platform and field-proven solutions bring together the physical and digital worlds to reinvent the way you create, operate, and service products. With PTC, global manufacturers and an ecosystem of partners and developers can capitalize on the promise of the IoT today and drive the future of innovation.
