Cloud-based Onshape introduces Onshape Drawings

Onshape, the much-hyped Boston-area fully web-based MCAD startup, seems to be proving that their customer’s feedback does matter by focusing the latest update on the introduction of Onshape Drawings. It is a full-cloud solution for creating professional 2D drawings of Onshape models.

How to use Onshape Drawing Views

Onshape Drawings is a tab in the Onshape Document. To create a Drawing, select the “+” icon in the bottom left corner and select “Create Drawing.” Once a template has been chosen Onshape will create a new drawing. There are several different view creation tools available in Onshape.

Standard Views, as well as Projected, Auxiliary, and Section Views are all available. when there is not enough room on a sheet, more can be added with the Sheets button in the toolbar. Once views have been added to the drawing, dimensions and other annotations can be added.

Onshape Drawing Dimensions

Onshape has a number of different dimension tools available. The dimension tools available are:

To add a dimension, select the dimension type, followed by the entities that needs dimension. Snap points can be visible when the cursor is moved over the drawing to snap the dimensions to the model.

In addition to adding dimensions, Onshape has added annotations to help further define drawings. Notes can be added with or without leaders as well as center marks and centerlines with the Centermark and Centerline command.

Drawing Templates

One of the most important elements to a drawing is its template and while Onshape provides different templates from their public Document, to get started users can upload their own DWT file as well. Any 2D CAD editing tool can be used to make changes to the templates and once modified the template file can be imported into an Onshape Document.
