Architosh recently wrote that Rhino 5 for Mac RC1 (release candidate 1) was out and that an official release, including pricing, was eminent. That day has come and Robert McNeel & Associates have today official unveiled the new Rhino 5 for Mac.
Folks may be wondering what is different or the same about Rhino 5 for Mac versus Windows and we have all the details here on that.
Introductory Pricing
For a limited-time the introductory price for Rhino 5 for Mac is 295.USD or 295.euro. This saves folks 200.USD/200.euro from now until 15 September 2015.
With the WIP (work in progress) no longer available, those interested in trying Rhino 5 for Mac can evaluate the final shipping version for a 90-day evaluation. Folks should be ever mindful that the special pricing ends 15 September 2015, so readers who download the version now can explore the full capabilities of Rhino on Mac all summer.
Switching from Windows to Mac Version & Education Pricing
Folks who have a Windows version of Rhino 5 cannot switch to the Mac version for free. However, there is special pricing available now until 15 September 2015.
Educational pricing is available. Students and teachers save 80 percent on pricing. The School Kit for Rhino is only Windows at the moment and saves 90 percent on pricing.
Coming Next—Grasshopper and Rhino 6
Rhino 5 today does not have the plugin support but that work is active and ongoing and the company states that version 5.1 is aiming to have plugin support. For Rhino 5.x the company will add the missing elements that the Windows version has, such as Worksessions, Layouts, and Animation tools. There is not priority ordering for which of those items will come first, second and last. Those who buy Rhino 5 for Mac will receive these updates at no additional cost.
In other words, buying Rhino 5 for Mac today will fix you into a version down the road that completes the missing pieces of the software.
Grasshopper support is the biggest requested feature for Mac. The company doesn’t have a time-table to announce yet. What can be said is that Grasshopper is planned to be integrated into Rhino 6 for Windows, but even the company is not saying this to the press or public, it’s something being stated to Rhino users directly in the forums.
