HP today briefed the press in an invite only event for their brand new DesignJet printers for design and large-format CAD and GIS professionals. The new HP DesignJet T920 and T1500 are completely new, from the ground up, large format printers that the fabled Palo Alto company hailed as industry leading.
Ramon Pastor, VP and GM of Large Format Printing, HP, said “the company has shipped more than 3 million large format printers since 1991, more than 8x its nearest competitor.” And all that is possible due to HP’s customer-centric innovation. For this new set of printers the company did some innovative anthropological research encompassing spending time with customers and observing them to discover their “pain points.” Additionally, the company also gave a select group of customers a kit of parts to create their own “ideal printer” and this led to great customer insight from these life-sized mock-ups.

Ramon Pastor said that “HP wants to transform DesignJets into ‘Information Hubs'” and extend the value of these devices in a new connected world where mobility is accelerating. On the live event webinar touting the great value of the new printers were Michel Rojkind and Geraldo Salinas, of the internally-regarded and award-winning architecture firm Rojkind Architects, of Mexico City, Mexico. The two architects spoke of their practice and how the new designs will add value to their workflow.

Acknowledging that Rojkind Architects travels the world for its projects, Michel Rojkind’s comments reinforce the importance of mobility in the printing workflows of AEC firms. Both printers work with HP’s noted ePrint & Share technologies, enabling a cloud-based solution that affords users to remotely print from both desktop and mobile platform. Both iPad, iPhone and Android-based devices are supported (editor’s note: only some Android devices are supported, users must verify with HP on complete support).

Both units feature 30 percent smaller footprints, front roll loading, six original HP color and black inks, automatic firmware upgrades, express output path, transparent cover so customers can see what is happening with the printing, adjustable 4.3 inch touchscreen and an innovative new output stacking tray and new flat surface for quick print checking.
