Team “BIM Unlimited” Wins at Build Qatar Live 2012

Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc., the makers of the award-winning Vectorworks lines of CAD/BIM software announced that team “BIM Unlimited” was awarded the “Best Use of BIM for Technical Assessment” award at the Build Qatar Live 2012, the first Open BIM design competition held in Qatar.

“BIM Unlimited” members with experience in architecture, structural engineering, pedestrian analysis, energy analysis and BIM management disciplines collaborated on their design from locations around the world, including the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Japan, India, France and the UK.

The “BIM Unlimited” team utilized an Open BIM approach to their workflow and members used Vectorworks Architect with Renderworks, Scia Engineer, DDS-CAD, ArchiWIZARD, CadFaster, Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) and SimTread software, and they tied this all together in the BIM workflow using IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) file format, the preferred Open BIM data model of the buildingSMART International organization and the model format of choice of the Build Qatar competition.

“Vectorworks’ high-end modeling tools gave us the ability to model a project with organic shapes without losing precision, as well as the ability to communicate with other tools,” said Architect Rubén Hernández Fontana from Estudio Caribe. “Vectorworks 2013 stood rock solid during the 48 hours of the competition. Fast, precise and robust.”

Build Qatar 2012 was organized by Asite, buildingSMART MENA & India and the BIM Journal. Build Qatar Live is a 48-hour virtual competition in which participants use cloud-based technology and a variety of software platforms to design a multi-use development for an internationally known site. The event took place 27-29 November 2012.
