French company Dassault Systemes, a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, announced the general availability of DraftSight for Windows, a no-cost 2D CAD (computer-aided design) product for professionals, students and educators. DraftSight is currently available for Mac OS X as a beta.
Originally launched in June 2010 as a general beta, DraftSight has been downloaded more than 400,000 times. Of these a very large percentage were for the Mac OS X version.
DraftSight is compatible with DWG files, the native file format for Autodesk AutoCAD, the world’s most popular CAD program. “DraftSight has been overwhelmingly embraced by the CAD and engineering community since its launch in June 2010. A lot of hard work has gone into this product, including many enhancements made during the beta phase,” said Aaron Kelly, Senior Director, DraftSight, Dassault Systemes.
Specific updates in this first general release for Windows include:
- API Support — For a fee customers can write add-on programs for DraftSight in C++ and other supported programming languages
- Localization of Help Files — Help comes in English, German, French, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish, Korean, Polish, Russian, and Czech).
- Command Variables Enhancement — Enables users to set and change system variables directly from the command line
