US Architects Increasingly Adopting Green Building

Greenbuild Expo, Autodesk, Inc., and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) have jointly announced the results of a new 2008 Autodesk/AIA Green Index, an annual survey that measures how many AIA members are practicing sustainable design, as well as their opinions about the green building movement.

This year’s results show an increase in the implementation of green design practices for architects and building owners. The 2008 index results show that 42 percent of architects report that their clients are asking for green design building elements on a majority of their projects, with 47 percent actually implementing green design measures. This is an increase of 15 percent from the 2007 Index results.

The report cites architects as indicating that client demand is the number one reason they are adopting green design measures. Architects believe that the primary reasons their clients are asking for green design is because their clients want to reduce their building operating costs (60%), or use it for marketing (52%), or because of market demand (21%, up from 10% in 2007).
