LightWave 3d team wins 2008 Emmy

NewTek’s award-winning cross-platform 3D animation suite LightWave 3D was noted for its contribution in helping the “Battlestar Galactica” production team win an 2008 Emmy award. “NewTek commends the Emmy-winning team for receiving this highest recognition from their peers,” said Jay Roth, president 3D division, NewTek Inc. “We are gratified that LightWave has, again, played a part in an award-winning production.”

The “Battlestar Galactica” production team includes Gary Hutzel, visual effects supervisor; Michael Gibson, visual effects producer; David Takemura, visual effects coordinator; Doug Drexler, CGI supervisor; Kyle Toucher, CG artist; Sean Jackson, CG artist; Pierre Drolet, CG modeler; Aurore de Blois, senior compositor; and Derek Ledbetter, compositor.

“In television, we’re required to create incredible and often massive effects shots, all with a very short timeframe, a small crew and an equally small budget. LightWave is the only program that allows me to work with breadth and speed while still giving me quality results,” said Gary Hutzel, visual effects supervisor and Emmy Award winner, Battlestar VFX. “With its broad range of built-in features and artist-friendly workflow, LightWave enables me to move quickly, render fast and create award-winning effects shots from start to finish, before the hammer falls.”

In the Emmy-winning episode, special visual effects ranged from Starbuck’s pristine and completely CG Viper to vast and dramatic space battles with cataclysmic ship explosions. The team also used particles to drive a swirling swarm of Cylon Raiders.

NewTek LightWave 3D combines a state-of-the-art renderer with intuitive and powerful modeling and animation tools. Version 9.5, is a major update to this award-winning 3D application with new capabilities including FiberFX, a complete hair and fur solution, a new lighting system and many improvements to animation, rendering and workflow. Tools that may cost extra in other professional 3D applications are part of the product package, including unlimited render nodes, hard- and soft-body dynamics, hair, fur, cloth simulation and more. LightWave is enjoyed worldwide as a complete 3D production tool for visual effects in television, film, broadcast graphics, games, visualization, print and web.
