MacCAD: BOA
to be OS X only in version 3.0
According to the official
BOA newsletter, Plane-Talk, BOA 2.0 will be the last classic
Mac version of this new and exciting Mac CAD application for architecture
and design. The new BOA 3.0, due mid winter, will be made for Mac
OS X only.
BOA is unique in that it depends on Apple's GX Graphics technology,
a technology that Apple never advanced. However, in OS X, BOA 3.0
will no longer require GX Graphics.
BOA is quite special in that literally everything you draw, in
addition to model, is actually floating in 3D space. That means
your text-based notes, symbols and other 2D items can be viewed
in 3D space inside model views (perspective, axonometric, etc.)
thus allowing for some special presentation capabilities with BOA.
As far as we understand the GX Graphics technology from Apple makes
this happen in OS 9, but with OS X and OpenGL this ability is in
place in the system.
Architosh
Analysis: This move to an OS X-only development
path is another continuing sign of strong support of Apple's newest
operating system from technical CAD and other advanced 3D developers.
For those who may not be aware, while Apple's biggest longtime developer—Adobe—may
be complaining of poor code in OS X, some of the largest apps by
3D and CAD developers is already running in OS X (Maya, LightWave,
Cinema4D, MacDraft, ArchiCAD and others) and is a clear sign of
not only the enthusiasm for the platform but of its readiness for
large complicated applications.
BOA's
decision to go OS X only by midwinter is a real show of support
and encouragement for Apple. In the fullness of time we'll see if
that remains viable for them.
