Part 4: Tools for Construction Documents

In this review we look at some of the new notation features in VectorWorks ARCHITECT, as well as the new AEC Object Libraries items, their use and their parametric abilities. In particular, we'll get into the new ConDoc standard notation manager tools.

As we have discussed in the earlier reviews, our detailed reviews of CAD programs for architecture will be reviewed in the context of a "fictional design problem" -- in this case a new BritasMedia offices building. Today the focus will be on detailing and noting the main studio tables with built-in shelves on one side. Click here to bring up a separate window of our sketched floor plan serving as a digital trace layer. You'll notice that the studio tables are linear arrayed elements in the plan. The shelves serve as storage space for the designers in front of you.

Working Backwards: The Finished Detail (partial)

Below is a partial of the finished detail section of the typical studio table with shelves built-in to the back side serving the designer in front of you. In this review we'll focus on the ConDoc notes you see below as well as the parametric objects used to speed this drawing process.

To draw this section we started by loading the Objects and Symbols commonly used in this type of detail work. VW ARCHITECT comes with a number of additional libraries unique to the architectural profession in addition to the AEC libraries found in just VectorWorks. These additional object libraries contain both 2D and 3D objects.

To load the 2D objects we used the Object Browser (new to VectorWorks 8.5) and opened the file named 00_Detailing.MCD. When opened this file presented a series of parametric objects in the Object Browser window which could be selected and dragged onto the drawing. They scale automatically to the active layer's scale.

The Object Browser Palette

In our last review we discussed the Object Browser a little as well. For those of you reading this who have worked in MiniCAD or VectorWorks 8.0.x or below this palette is entirely new. You select it from the Palettes menu.

The Object Browser shown at left is displaying "objects" which are shown in RED. Objects in VectorWorks 8.5 come in one of three colors: BLACK, RED, OR BLUE. BLACK objects mean they are ordinary symbols just as in older versions of MiniCAD. BLUE objects mean they are ordinary 'VectorWorks objects' and are preconfigured as symbols in size, shape or some other characteristic.

RED objects are 'Plug-in Objects'. These are fully parametric objects which can be changed in size, shape or some other characteristic by way of editing info in the Object Info Palette.

In our drawing we needed some common 2x lumber pieces for the detail. Rather than draw these (even once) you can add the Detail Cut Wood object shown in first column in the Object Browser at left. You select it and drag it over to your drawing placing it with a click of the mouse.

Once located on the sheet you can deselect it and then reselect it and change its attributes at any time. Before placing it a few different times in our detail above we edited some attributes in the Object Info palette. The first choice was the 'Config' choice between Rough, Blocking and Finish. Choosing Blocking will place just one diagonal line in the lumber while choosing Finish will show a wood grain pattern. The box 'Show Size' is selected which places the 2x4 numbers in the section. You can select a smaller Text size -- down to a font of size 6 pt. We did this because it was cleaner looking.

The Width and Height allow you to choose between standard nominal lumber sizes, but VA draws the lumber elements at their actual sizes. Hence, the 2x4 is actually drawn at 1 1/2" x 3 1/2". As you can see you can use customized dimensions as well.

Using the Bolts Objects

We used the Nut & Bolt object shown in the palette above as well. This object is really quite cool in terms of its options and configurations and how you use it. This is the benefit of ARCHITECT's new object libraries -- you get a number of very useful parametric objects that speed detail drawing development.
