Special Mac REPORT: Diehl Graphsoft explains merger with Nemetschek
An Architosh Exclusive Report on the number one Macintosh CAD vendor's recent merger.
Intro Welcome to this special report on what must qualify as one of the most surprising stories in the Macintosh market this year and one of the most intriguing mergers in the CAD space. When Diehl Graphsoft announced last month that they were going to be acquired by the German CAD software powerhouse, Nemetschek AG, many questions and concerns immediately rang bells in the minds of Macintosh CAD professionals -- especially those pros currently working with VectorWorks on the Macintosh platform. This report addresses those issues (organized above).
Part 1: Why the Merger? As detailed in our report on the merger press release, Diehl Graphsoft had announced the Nemetschek AG, of Munich, Germany, acquired Diehl Graphsoft Inc, (Nasdaq DIEG) for $9.50 per share in a cash deal worth millions. As many know, Diehl Graphsoft had been trading publicly and recently been identified as a stock worth chasing on Wall Street. In 1999, Diehl Graphsoft had a tremendous year with the launch of MiniCAD VectorWorks being a huge hit with both Macintosh and -- increasingly -- Windows-based architects and other CAD professionals. And with the release of its first "vertical market" product, VectorWorks ARCHITECT, the company is hotter than ever. So why, with so many things going so well, become acquired by another CAD company (a company, by-the-way, that offers no products or services to the Macintosh professional)? This is THE question! And to help you understand, Richard Diehl, CEO of Diehl Graphsoft, explains:
The company also explains to us that in addition to its financial strength, Nemetschek AG has technologies that, when coupled with Diehl Graphsoft's legacy of developing powerful innovations at cost-effective prices, effectively mounts a significant threat to Autodesk and Bentley. And Diehl Graphsoft is excited about being a part of an aggressive challenge to the two global CAD leaders. Now what comes to mind at this point is, who is Nemetschek and how do they provide this for Diehl Graphsoft without comprising their position in the CAD market space? That is answered in Part 2. For those of you using VectorWorks or thinking of using VectorWorks (especially on the Mac) and want to know how it will change, skip on over to Part 3.
