Mac News around
the Web: SGI OpenGL, OS X support and more...
Playing a little catch up, Media
100 Inc. announced this week full support for Apple's new Dual
G4 Power Mac line with pending certification of the dual 1 Ghz and
933 Mhz models. Media 100i Version 8 for Mac OS X is being featured
on the main page of their web site. You can take a tour of the new
V8 Aqua interface
here.
SGI announced OpenGL
Vizserver 2.0 this week. The software is designed to deliver
advanced visualization capabilities to any client device across
any existing network -- such as the Internet. The Vizserver runs
on SGI Onyx (IRIX) servers and the client is currently supported
on a number of UNIX operating systems, Linux's and Windows 2000/XP/NT.
Future Mac OS X support is in the cards pending customer request.
This new product is the foundation of SGI's new paradigm called
Visual Area Networking. To
learn more read here.
Also announced by SGI
was the world's fastest interactive graphics with the new InfinitePerformance
Graphics subsystem. SGI claims to have trumped the competition with
a 2.3 times performance advance. What does the fastest graphics
performance in the world cost? Base prices start at $117,000 US.
SGI and Apple
It should be noted that SGI also posted its first profitable quarter
last week in quite some time, announcing upbeat projections for
the near future. At the end of January the stock was up to $2.90
after coming all the way down to 0.30 cents a share a week after
September 11th. Architosh has been tracking SGI's activity for more
than two years on speculation that Apple may merge or buy SGI's
key assets, those of which include Alias/Wavefront, the makers of
Maya software. The current thinking on SGI and Apple is that Jobs
is unlikely to want to purchase a whole subsidiary much less SGI
itself. However, there is growing speculation that Apple may purchase
the Maya software product within the next six months.
With our current US Administration's 'War Brewing-Defense' mentality,
SGI's stock may be an especially attractive option, as the company
is the world's premier supplier of advanced defense industry visualization
and supercomputing products and servicesitems that increase
in value in an 'Age of Terror'.
