Apple's QuickTime Conference Keynote: Summary Report
Today was Phil Schiller's keynote address at the first annual QuickTime Users Conference. To learn more about the event itself go to Apple's QuickTime site. What's new and 'cool' for QuickTime users:
New Apple QuickTime Partnerships The first developer partner Phil brought on stage was Oracle. Oracle's 8i web-enabled database products now have QuickTime integration, allowing things like QuickTime streaming and search capabilities via Apple's Sherlock plug-in technologies. Steve, the Oracle guy's first name (didn't catch his last name) said something to this affect at the end of his presentation: "Oracle and Apple work so well together our only differences are what type of beer the engineers like to drink when they go out at night." Phil also talked about Akamai and their partnership with them to make distribution better by getting video and audio content closer to the end user. Another mention was a new partnership with Interview Network, who will be deploying QuickTime Streaming Server over their network as well. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all was the announcement from Novell. Novell has developed a way of allowing pausing during watching live netcasting of streaming video over the Internet. So next time that phone rings during a live QuickTime broadcast, you can pause, answer the phone, and resume later without missing anything. Also great for those that catch things late. This caching server technology is the first of its kind developed anywhere and its available for QuickTime only. One of the great things about Apple's QuickTime technology plans is the open-source model adoption for QuickTime Streaming Server as part of the Darwin OS project. This is allowing companies like Novell and others to develop great products for QuickTime content, including bringing these products to other operating systems besides Macintosh and Windows. Apple should be delivering much more on the keynote and other company announcements over the course of this week. Stay tuned to Apple.com
