Ever since the first iPod Touch was released, I’ve been saying that a programmable screen as part of the keyboard would be coming. I’m a little disappointed at the Touch Bar, though. I have yet to use one, so I’ll have to see what I think after having the chance to experiment a bit.

I started into CAD in the early ‘90s, when the digitizer tablet was a common accessory. So accessory inputs have always been a part of CAD for me. I saw about an iPod Touch sized screen that would have buttons, sliders, dials, and such that would change depending on the current command. For example, while typing in a Word processor, keys for bold, italic, underline, and such would appear on the screen instead of having to remember all the CTRL keys. Or color, weight, layer, and endpoint style would appear while drawing lines on CAD.

There is no reason these wouldn’t work with the Touch Bar, so maybe it is just my previous vision of how such a system would work that disappoints me. I’ll have to see.
