Mac CAD and 3D News: We have tidbits on LumenRT, Adobe's key bug fix on 3D in Acrobat, modo use for Norelco and Apple

Apple 3D Patents Point Towards Mac Future

We generally don’t write about Apple’s patent trail but this jot covers an interesting patent related to the world of 3D. AppleInsider uncovered a patent from Apple that describes a Microsoft Xbox Kinect-like interface technology that is sans physical controller. Instead users use their hands to move items in the UI.

Entitled “Three-Dimensional Imaging and Display System” the Apple patent (application #20110298798) attributed to Christopher Krah of Apple. In a nutshell, the Apple patent describes a method that allows the control of a 3D computer interface via a 3-dimensional imaging and display apparatus that scans and detects physical movement within a volume of space. With the system, a user could perform gestures with their hands within a given volume of space in order to control the user-interface of their Mac computer. To learn more read here.

Ad Agency Walter Isaacson uses modo

For the recent holidays Walter Isaacson was hired by Philips Norelco to produce a new TV commercial for their new SensoTouch 3D rechargeable razor. They decided to re-imagine one of Norelco’s most popular holiday ads of all time, which was a stop-motion ad featuring Santa sledding through the snow atop one of their products.

For this new ad Isaacson turned to computer graphics studio re:think studios, of Chicago. re:think studios is a big-time Luxology modo user and turned to modo to produce the ad. “mod is blazing fast!” said Brian Bulock, director of CGI and partner at re:think studios. “And with the deadline we had on this spot, we needed every minute. I vote we put modo on the nice list.” You can watch the spot here at Vimeo.

Adobe to update Critical 3D Bugs in Acrobat

Adobe is slated to update critical 3D vulnerabilities in its Acrobat and Reader applications across platforms today. The bugs were discovered in December where the 3d file format .u3d contained memory corruption issues that could lead to code attacks. These were limited in practice to the Windows platform, says Adobe. To learn more visit this eWeek news report.

LumenRT Customer Story

Vue software maker e-on software has had a new product out for awhile now called LumenRT, a plugin product for SketchUp. The photorealistic rendering plugin has received good reviews in the industry.

You can learn a little bit about this product by watching and reading the customer profile of Matthew Stone, a landscape design professional in Australia, who switched from Autodesk 3D Studio Max to SketchUp with LumenRT for its rendering platform. Read the interview here.

New Modeling and Rendering Capabilities Helped Engineering Firm Design+Modo's birth the innovative Three-Wheeled Speed "Trike."

Australian industrial design firm, Design+Industry, has recently come out with a three-wheeled, high-performance vehicle, (car/motorcycle) designed with an expert use of Luxology’s3D modeling and rendering software, modo 501.

The Australian company, Design+Industry was asked by Strike Motors to turn a concept of a three-wheeled “trike” into a commercially manufacturable vehicle. What was born was ‘the Trike’, half-car, half-motorcycle, this two seater combines cornering capability and high stopping power. With stability and speed, this car is estimated to catch car enthusiasts and collectors, for its sleek futuristic design.

“We began using modo when clients started requesting features we were not able to provide with the visualisation software we were using at the time,” said Ben Carroll, industrial designer at Design+Industry.

He continued to say, ”We have had clients ask to see the physical prototype after our presentation based solely on a picture done in modo and that ‘wow’ factor has always served us well.”

modo has a great new plugin in recoil, for rigid body dynamics

Luxology, LLC, this week has announced the availability of recoil™ a new plugin for modo 501 that accurately simulates dynamic rigid body interactions. Based on the popular open source Bullet physics engine, which is used extensively within the game and film industries, recoil™ realistically simulates dynamic forces and calculates accurate collisions between objects, allowing users to quickly create incredibly complex animations or automatically stack vast numbers of objects.

recoil plugin

Eric Soulvie developed the plugin for both Mac and Windows versions of modo 501 using the modo Plug-In Software Development Kit (SDK). It utilizes version 2.77 of the Bullet physics engine. Recoil simplifies the process of setting up dynamic actions. Simply tagging any mesh item to be dynamic, the object is then ready to respond to forces like gravity or collisions from other objects in modo.

01 - recoil is the first serious commercial plugin developed with the new modo plugin SDK (software developer kit).

“recoil is a fast, powerful and fun-to-used product that will be attractive to our large community of modo users,” said Brad Peebler, president and co-founder of Luxology. “This is the most extensive use of the modo plugin SDK to date and represents a significant milestone for modo as a 3D platform.”

What recoil Does:

Any mesh item can be made dynamic, responding to forces

Objects can be given “wake-up” conditions and an initial “impulse” behavior

A system of connectors, including springs and motors enables complex linked behaviors like spinning gears, elastic coils or swining chains

Dynamic simulation can be combined with traditional keyframe animation

recoil is also useful for stacking objects so that they come to a resting position naturally, such as cubes of sugar in a dish or gumballs in a vending machine

recoil™ is available immediately and retails for 199.USD. To learn more visit Luxology’s main website here.

Why does Bentley sponsor the Smartgeometry conference? What does the future of Generative Components look like? We talk about some of that here.

During the Smartgeometry Conference in Copenhagen a week ago, Huw Roberts, AIA and Makai Smith, both of Bentley Systems, spoke about the company’s involvement with the conference, its software such as Generative Components and a bit about its future.

During the event we tweeted key comments during both of their talks on our Architosh Twitter feed. You can revisit that now here.

Huw Roberts

Huw Roberts AIA is an architect who has been with Bentley for many years now. He has a deep understanding of practice and its many forms and orientations. He also understands the many challenges all AEC firms face in a global economy where practice is increasingly complex and often geographically dispersed.

01 - Huw Roberts AIA of Bentley, speaking at Smartgeometry 2011 Copenhagen.

During his talk he mentioned that Bentley is the world’s largest software company dedicated to all of the AEC market. Bentley has a diverse product portfolio that goes far beyond building design and engineering to civil and plant design, facilities and more. They are the world’s number one software company for structural engineering solutions. And the company’s annual revenue is now at half billion US dollars.

One of the more interesting things Huw said was that Bentley spends up to 20 percent of its annual revenue on research and development. And Generative Components is not actually apart of that figure. Generative Components, he said, is actually free software and therefore is placed outside those figures. Certainly there is ongoing R&D for GC as well but there was no mention of a dollar figure.

Why GC? Why Smartgeometry Conference?

Huw explained that the company is invested in advancing Generative Components because as a product it aligns with the company’s overall visions for innovation. And Bentley is interested in “open information…sharing data.” And the types of projects and problems firms around the world are facing and using GC to solve critically inform Bentley’s full line of software solutions. Generative Components dovetails with Bentley’s software for architects and engineers and Huw noted that going forward it will continue to inform and impact the development of other products.

Huw said the company is doing “syndicated development” projects, whereby Bentley works in a co-op way with major firms or institutions in addressing new challenges through software. Today the company is working on a $24 billion ultimate integration project. And this summer the company will be introducing something they call Model Documentation.

Generative Components is advanced 3D software for design that goes beyond just complex geometry creation or solving. It enables designers to capture and define relationships, set up rules and algorithms, and iterate using numerical methods and rule-based interdependencies.

In a slide Huw showed a building with a complex steel frame holding up a skylight system. Bentley created an algorithm that addressed two inter-related issues and setup a relationship. One issue was that of energy loss (heat gain/loss) through the skylight, while the other issue was that of steel weight. The last issue affects cost directly for the structure. The first issue affects operations costs. How do architects design so that they can solve both sets of problems simultaneously? (see image 01)

02 - Makai Smith, who heads up Generative Components at Bentley gave an engaging talk. In this slide he shows an architecture from form say 1970 and compares it to one today. Not much has changed, he contends. The future of practice will need to change the formation of firms.

Huw said these are the types of problems the technology in Bentley’s product suites address, and will continue to address in more complexity.

Finally, Smartgeometry is something Bentley has been very proud to be involved in and sponsoring for many years. The conference frames and addresses many of the most technically challenging AEC problems in the world, using the latest computational research and practice methodologies. GC is a key component tool for those participating in Smartgeometry.

modo 501 out and supports Pixar SubDivision Surfaces and a lot more....

Earlier this month Luxology announced the release of modo 501, the latest version of their award-winning 3D software package. The 501 version increases rendering speed, offers ray-tracing viewports, multi-resolution sculpting and third-party plugin SDK support. modo 501 is also the first release that supports 64-bit support on Mac OS X.

“We love 3D and are pleased to see the 3D market growing across the board. Part of Luxology’s contribution is to continue to develop modern 3D software applications that are open and artist friendly,” said Brad Peebler, president and co-founder of Luxology. “A key part of this effort is to listen to our users and create products that match their needs. modo 501 delivers this with a community-inspired set of new features and workflow enhancements that make an actual difference in daily production.”

modo 501’s New Features

modo 501 has dozens of new features but what follows below is a brief summary of key elements of the release:

Rendering – raytracing is further speed optimized offering 30-40 percent performance gain. The Preview Renderer now progressively renders to near final quality and can prioritize updates in areas where users scrub with a mouse or pen

User Experience – The new RayGL viewport option lets users model in a raytraced environment, blending modeling and rendering.

Modeling – modo 501 now supports industry standard Pixar Subdivision Surfaces and new “one click” modeling tools for common modeling operations speeding up the workflow. Procedurural geometry tools make their debut and new snapping and alignment tools enhance precision.

Sculpting – Sculpting tools now work on multi-resolution meshes, facilitating coarse or fine adjustments to surfaces as needed. This is equivalent to further subdivision levels in similar tools (eg: Autodesk Mudbox).

Texturing – New occlusion texturing options make it easier to create worn edges, corroded crevices and the like. modo 501 also supports disk-based, tiled-image map formats allowing users to work with images that are much larger than the available system memory.

Other key new features include improvements to fur rendering, a new node-based schematic viewport system for animation and a software development kit for third-party developers.

01 - modo 501 supports Pixar SubDivision Surfaces.

For architectural visualization modo 501 now supports a “billboard” capability to help efficiently visualize trees and leaves.

“This release is really all about the user’s experience,” said Chris Hague, freelance 3D illustrator and modo 501 beta tester. “I think it’s that specific focus that draws me to modo and makes Luxology such a special company.”

modo 501 is available now and comes with a dual license that supports both Mac OS X and Windows. The software has a suggested retail price of 995.USD with upgrades at 395.USD. To learn more or contact an authorized modo reseller visit: www.luxology.com

Video highlights Luxology's research into GPU rendering.

Brad Peebler, President of Luxology, the makers of modo, has a feature video wherein he speaks about the company’s efforts to understand the latest GPU rendering craze and what it means for the future development of rendering in general and modo in particular.

Highlights

Here are some of the highlights from Peebler’s talk:

Post Siggraph 2010 Event – Luxology Does its homework

Brad says Luxology has always been looking at parallel computing

Luxology works with its CPU partner, Intel, on some research

Intel and Luxology research begets some CPU optimizations for future modo 501

Luxology compares Octane Render vs modo 501

GPU rendering has promise with brute force rendering but has many more limitations

Peepler believes Luxology’s CPU code is pretty darn fast!

Luxology is not pro CPU or anti GPU

Luxology sees the GPU as additional cores, not alternate cores

Luxology looks to the “cloud” for additional cores – does pure research on this avenue

Peepler’s talk is very interesting. The bottom line is that Luxology is doing its homework thoroughly to get at the possible futures of rendering with both CPU and GPU cores.

01 - modo with CPU rendering vs Octane with GPU rendering. Brad Peebler shows the results of their internal research to find the best options for faster rendering by utilizing GPU cores in addition to CPU cores.

Even if you don’t use modo for your modeling, rendering and animation needs, this video is a very informative and useful type of content. I am sure you will find it as interesting as we did.

George Lucas's Industrial Light and Magic has made Luxology's modo an essential part of its toolset.

Luxology has announced that the Art Department at San Francisco-based Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), a division of Lucasfilm Ltd., is pioneering the evolution of the concept development process by adopting Luxology’s award-winning modo 3D software application.

“Our clients rely on the ILM art department to create world-class concept art and design for their films. To generate that type of work we utilize best-of-breed tools, and modo is turning out to be a terrific 3D tool for the team,” said Richard Kerris, CTO at Lucasfilm Ltd.. “modo is playing a key role in how certain looks and concepts are best created and it has earned its place in our toolset.”

ILM has set the standard for visual effects and has contributed to some of the most influential and groundbreaking films of the last 35 years. Working alongside a full compliment of professional tools, 3D concept art developed in modo has played a key role in a number of recent projects including Confessions of a Shapaholic and Iron Man 2.

The talented artists in the Art Department at ILM are responsible for the technical 3D aspects needed to create the artistic feel of an entire film ranging from small details, such as how a creature’s skin will look, to the creation of an actual character, vehicle or environment. With the scale and complexity of modern production, an efficient workflow is key to getting projects done quickly. Using modo 401’s modeling, painting and rendering tools, artists can efficiently iterate on a concept and provide a filmmaker with multiple options to best capture their vision.

In addition to leveraging modo’s speed, the ILM Art Department has also been able to add a new dimension to a process that was fundamentally rooted in 2D imagery. 3D concept art can be incorporated into the company’s production pipeline as modo geometry and renderings created for artistic reference can readily be prepped for production.

Mac-using architect uses Luxology's popular modo 401 to design full-scale LEGO house for TV show

One of the most popular children’s toys of all time, LEGO’s, were used in a new and innovative way when Barnaby Gunning Architects leveraged Luxology’s award-winning 3D software, modo, to model and visualize a full-size house made entirely out of the building blocks.

The house was constructed for a TV show, the BBC’s James May’s Toy Stories, where each episode focuses on the creation of ambitious projects using classic toys. Barnably Gunning, architect, used modo 401 to virtually create the LEGO house which consisted of over 3 million pieces. The house was designed in just two weeks and over 2,000 members of the general public and a dedicated team of volunteers physically constructed the house.

“modo 401 gave us a feel for the material quality of LEGOs as a large-scale building material long before we were actually able to put any of the components together,” said Gunning. “It made it easy for us to lay out exactly what we needed to build this structure and helped keep tabls on the number of bricks being used for each piece.”

To see some amazing photos of the LEGO house visit the Luxology website here.

modo based architect re-examines possible public uses for Eastern Section of San Francisco's Bay Bridge

A massive project is underway to replace the eastern portion of the 73-year old Bay Bridge, however bay area architect and Luxology modo user Ronald Rael sees other visions for the old structure, including its re-use as a public space with parks, houses and sporting facilities.

Ronald Rael is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at UC Berkeley and a partner in Rael San Fratello Architects. He used modo to develop his innovative concept for the Bay Bridge. The result is a transformational space he believes would become a San Francisco landmark, with housing units hung from the bottom span of the bridge and a trail that links public spaces along the top level.

“I love how quickly I can prototype ideas using modo,” says Rael. “I believe modo has profound implications for architecture, even though it is not necessarily an architectural software. It opens up wonderful creative opportunities by bringing both freedom and efficiency to this kind of visualization.”

Rael is a staunch advocate of repurposing old urban infrastructure. One of the main inspirations for his Bay Bridge design is a New York City apartment he once lived in that overlooked The High Line Park, an old elevated railway that is currently being converted into a public park.

“These structures are part of our collective culture, and creative minds can re-envision them using tools like modo,” he says. “If a linear park was created on the Bay Bridge, people would come from all over the world to see it. At the least, I hope this proposal helps to gets people thinking about reusing existing structures instead of simply tearing them down.”

In the meantime, Rael is involved in several other high-profile architectural projects that involve modo, including a UCLA-sponsored project called WPA 2.0 that examines new approaches to public infrastructure, with an upcoming presentation to politicians in Washington, D.C. this November. Rael is proposing the use of solar panels or water treatment facilities instead of fences along the U.S.-Mexican border, providing useful functions while preserving border security. He relied heavily upon modo’s replicator feature for the creation of hundreds of photo-realistic solar panels and waterways.

Whether he’s designing bridges, buildings, or fabricating new materials, Rael has found modo to be an essential tool for realizing creative designs.

“I think the language of my work has actually changed through the lens of modo,” he says. “If you use a parallel bar, you would design a certain way, because you’re limited by the linear orientation. But using modo, I actually feel as though I’m using the part of my brain that allows me to be more creative and makes the experience more enjoyable.”

More information about Ronald Rael and his work with modo can be found athttp://www.luxology.com/community/profiles/ronald_rael/.

Luxology develops modo user Web Portal -- features assets and content download and upload for users.

Luxology has developed a participatory content-sharing web portal and learning resource for its modo users and 3D artists. Users are now able to upload and download Presets of all kinds as well as exchange associated usage tips and techniques with other artists.

Introduced concurrently with the recently released modo 401, the custom-developed Web site provides modo artists with an easily accessible online resource for content re-utilization. Asset types include modo Presets and surface materials, 3D meshes, profile curves, animation assemblies and professionally designed lighting environments, which can all be utilized in modo 401. Users can upload their images and other assets to the site so that other users can utilize them.

“With this new sharing mechanism, we are offering modo users the collective talent, experience and creative output of the entire modo user base,” said Brad Peebler, president and co-founder of Luxology.

“I’ve already found the asset sharing site to be a fantastic resource,” says Yazan Malkosh, a 3D artist and modo 401 beta tester. “Browsing the assets currently available online, including various materials, environments, meshes, assemblies and profiles, is very motivational.”

Luxology LLC introduces new COLLADA plugin for upcoming modo 401.

California-based Luxology LLC, the makers of modo 3D software have announced a new customized COLLADA plugin for the soon to be released modo 401. The plugin will enable both import of COLLADA files and exportation from modo 401. modo users will easily be able to preserve key attributes of their mode creations for file export and even round-trip manipulations in complex 3D pipelines.

The company will be demonstrating its new plugin at GDC 2009 Chalk Talk session titled, “New COLLADA I/O Plugin for modo 401.” Presented by Luxology’s David Vasquez, the session will take place at the Intel Visual Adrenaline Lounge from 1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26.

“There should be no barriers between different applications in a 3D workflow,” says Brad Peebler, president and founder of Luxology. “With our new COLLADA support, modo users will enjoy a transparent workflow that allows them to preserve crucial attributes of 3D files both into and out of modo.”

COLLADA is an open-source, XML-based file format for 3D content creation tools and forms a rival exchange format to Autodesk’s FBX. It is widely used in streamlining mixed-application 3D workflows (also known as pipelines in the VFX industry).
