In our last Notes report on Macworld Expo we cover some nifty iPhone applications, a great new app called ModelBaker for iPhone development, and a business enterprise or small-business software tool for mixed platform (Mac/Win) studios and groups.

During Macworld Expo’s we normally get a lot of requests from companies exhibiting to check out their products and services, even though they often appear to not have an understanding of our readership and publication focus. We politely decline to all those iPod vendors and the like; however usually there are a small group of companies that do pique our interest. In our final report we’ll cover some of these plus some of the miscellaneous items from Macworld Expo SF 2009.

ExtremeZ-IP by GroupLogic

GroupLogic contacted us prior to Macworld and we booked a time to meet them. Meeting GroupLogic president, T. Reid Lewis, he explained that the company wanted to show us ExtremeZ-IP. So what is this ExtremeZ-IP anyway?

The purpose of ExtremeZ-IP is to run it on your Windows Servers and run it in lieu of Windows Services for Macintosh (aka: SFM). ExtremeZ-IP is an application for Windows server operating systems and supports up to the very latest Windows Server 2008.

So why it rather than SFM? The answer is because Services for Macintosh (SFM) is no longer built into the latest Windows server software (Windows Server 2008) and SFM only supports version 2.2 of AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) — which is four versions behind what is shipping today in Macs.

ExtremeZ-IP 5.3 is the industry’s first and only Windows-based server solution to fully support Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X 10.5, including the latest Apple File Sharing Protocol, AFP 3.2 for complete platform and application compatibility between Macs and Windows in a mixed computing environment. The features of ExtremeZ-IP are very extensive but here are some highlights:

Supports Windows Server 2008, including AppleTalk printing support (for legacy needs)

Only Windows solution for Apple’s innovative Time Machine backup

Fully Integrated File and Print Sharing Solution (built in Print Server)

Innovative Zidget tool for discovery and setup of printers, including PPDs

Print Tracking and Accounting for Cost Tracking and Chargeback

A Multi-Platform Plotter Tracking and Chargeback System

In fact one of the more interesting features is the ability to use this product for tracking and accounting for client chargebacks. In AEC (architecture/engineering/construction) firms in particular a multi-platform solution that is simplified (as compared to the complex database driven solutions out in the industry) is not truly in existence yet.

This was discussed with Reid Lewis, President of GroupLogic, and he was interested and curious about this particular problem facing mixed and/or Mac-only AEC firms. Most plotter accounting for large-format printers is often done manually in smaller and even mid-sized firms. HP itself — the leading large color plotter provider to AEC — doesn’t provide the simplified, cross-platform solution in software form that one might expect.

To learn more about GroupLogic and ExtremeZ-IP for your mixed-platform environment visit them here.

VectorDesigner by TweakerSoft

We had a chance to stop by and see this new application called VectorDesigner by TweakerSoft, a small Mac-focused developer from Italy. We were not surprised at all to learn that the product won a Best of Show 2008 from Macworld. For those of you who find larger illustration software tools frustrating and complex, this may be your best answer yet.

VectorDesigner wins Best of Show 2008 Macworld.

We were impressed by VectorDesigner’s beautiful use of modern Mac OS X programming technologies such as Quartz Composer and Core Image. The product is a substitute for Adobe Illustrator and similar apps. Yet it costs just $69.USD. The beauty in this app is its simplicity. Yet is can produce powerful results. We were impressed with its ability to place texts on complex paths, to do complex layering, opacity and color image effects. And we were also impressed with its live hook-up with Flickr using its built-in Flickr Browser to grab images and textures.

Also interesting was its Bezier creation and editing tools, iSight integration on Macs, iLife photo browser and QuickLook support. It can import vector formats such as PDF, EPS and SVG. It can also export PDF of course and EPS. Raster format import/export includes most of the essentials (eg: JPEG, TGA, SGI, PSD, etc.).

To learn more visit them here.

Architosh expands its notes from the Autodesk announcements at this month's Macworld Expo and Conference.

As many of you know by now Autodesk made a somewhat big splash at Macworld Expo and yet the company wasn’t even there in booth-form! Instead, tucked away in a conference room in a hip and stylish SF hotel, Autodesk hosted a series of private meetings with a selective group of Mac press.

The big news was that Autodesk was making big news at Macworld Expo.

However, their announcements, which we have covered in detail here on Architosh, were noteworthy for themselves as much as what they portend.

The Augur Says…

If the Mac world had its own official augur he or she might suggest that Autodesk’s statements to Architosh during this private press meeting bode to a changing world within the computer industry.

In fact, as far as “signs” are concerned Autodesk’s presentment at Macworld Expo is as bold and forthwith as Apple’s unashamed statements that they were no longer really interested in attending Macworld Expo in the future.

But much like IBM’s tantrum over Mark Papermaster’s hitch-up with Apple, Autodesk’s flat out statements about serving Mac customers came as a bit of a shock. And like the IBM versus Apple battle over Papermaster, both indicate a changing world within the computer industry.

Apple and the Mac Matter

The tone of the meeting with Autodesk was very clear. In fact there were two tones bound together into a single timbre. It said: Apple is important to our customers…ever growingly so. And the second part said: Autodesk intends to fully meet this demand.

Rob Hoffmann, Sr. Product Marketing Manager 3D for Autodesk’s Media & Entertainment division, said quite plainly that “the Mac market is extremely important to Autodesk.” “If you asked me four years ago about the Mac I would have said they were a rare sight within the production studio, but now they are a common sight,” says Rob. “The Mac is just like any other platform within entertainment sharing the same roles as Windows and Linux.”

Outside M&E

Beyond the Media & Entertainment division Rob could not elaborate to the same extent as a man whose been serving the entertainment-driven 3D software market for over 14 years. But he did say “we are experiencing across the entire Autodesk software portfolio…strong demand for Mac support.”

But while the Mac is growing at an accelerating rate within the markets Autodesk serves, customers shouldn’t get too hopeful for particular Autodesk apps they would like to see on their beloved platform. Rob told us that how Autodesk will respond to Mac demand within its portfolio depends on a matrix of factors, least of which is development ease and cost…and opportunity for growth.

Up there in the complexity curve would be applications like Autodesk AutoCAD and maybe some of its very Windows-API oriented design applications. Easier apps to deliver to the Mac would be those they just started developing or those that were developed by others first (pre-acquisition) that developed around more portable software development models.

Architosh spoke with Smith Micro's Steve Yatson, Senior Director Graphics Solutions at Macworld Expo about his company's growing portfolio of 3D software for Mac and Windows.

One of the more interesting positive surprises at Macworld Expo this year was the meeting we had with Smith Micro Software’s Steve Yatson, Senior Director Graphic Solutions. Architosh’s main objective with meeting with Smith Micro was to gain an understanding about what this company is doing with its growing portfolio of Mac 3D and design applications.

The Smith Micro Talk

As it turns out Steve Yatson is a veteran of sorts in the world of Mac 3D software. This was a pleasant thing to hear because he is the man in charge of Smith Micro’s division of creative 3D tools. His background was in serving similar capacities and product management for the early Poser team.

Poser of course is not only a Mac stalwart developer but one of the veteran 3D applications within the entire 3D universe. Steve said that Smith Micro purchased e-Frontier software and several leading 3D tools came with it.

“All of Smith Micro’s Macintosh 3D software tools will remain on the Mac,” said Steve Yatson. “Smith Micro is interested in being a leading graphics software developer for Apple’s Mac platform, which is why we are at this show.” He said that in some cases the development teams cannot always release a new update for both platforms at the same time, but generally speaking the goal is to do so.

Developer, Publisher and Distributor

I asked Steve to explain their portfolio, since it is not clear how everything works. “In some cases some products are developed internally by Smith Micro software programmers,” he said, “while in other cases we simply publish or even just distribute the application.”

Smith Micro’s own developers are based in Watsonville, California. Steve Yatson said that the internal group can and sometimes provides developer assistance to other developer groups within companies that simply get published by the company.

Asked how Smith Micro makes its decision as to what companies to acquire or choose to publish or distribute, he said fundamentally they are looking for great products that fit their goals for the Graphics Solutions group. These are based on both 2D and 3D tools for professional and digital artists.

Smith Micro now publishes or develops key Mac 3D applications like the Poser Pro and Poser line up; Amapi Pro, a NURBS modeling suite; GroBoto, an artistic 3D tool; the Manga Studio line up; the Anime Studio lineup; and MashON SPORE Comic Book Creator, which they showed at the show

The company also publishes or develops several photo and media tools and is the distributor of RapidWeaver, an award-winning Website creation tool just for the Mac.

Rob Hoffmann, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Autodesk's Media & Entertainment division said during a private meeting that MotionBuilder for the Mac still important to the company.

Architosh’s press meeting with Autodesk at Macworld Expo this month generated a series of interesting insights into the company and how it views itself, the companies and products it acquires, and Apple and the Mac professional user base. We share some special discussion from that meeting in this report here, titled: Autodesk Talks to Architosh about Mac.

But one interesting detail we brought up in the meeting has to do with MotionBuilder, a product that in its latest release was only made available for Windows. MotionBuilder, of course, was made into a Mac darling during a SIGGRAPH show back in 2003, where Richard Kerris, then Apple Sr. Director of Worldwide Developer Relations, expressed enthusiasm for Kaydara’s decision to concentrate all UNIX develop just on Mac OS X. With so much put into MotionBuilder on the Mac we were wondering why Autodesk didn’t release a version for the Mac this last update cycle.

MotionBuilder Important to Mac Base

Rob Hoffmann, Autodesk’s Sr. Product Marketing Manager for its Media & Entertainment division explained that Autodesk still makes MotionBuilder 2008 available for Mac users and that the current 2009 release — while only available for Windows at the moment — is not a sign of the company’s lack of commitment to the Mac platform.

“On the contrary,” said Rob Hoffmann, “Autodesk is deeply committed to its Mac-based customers and the products they rely on.” Asked for an explanation, Rob said that the lack of a native Mac version for 2009 came down to development resources. “At the time we didn’t have the developer support internally do meet all our goals and get the Mac parts working too,” said Rob. “But we are working on it.”

In the meantime, Mac users looking for MotionBuilder can acquire the 2008 version. To learn more visit: www.autodesk.com

Architosh had a private press briefing with Autodesk at Macworld Expo - This article provides more details, background and photos of the new Mac native Autodesk Mudbox 2009.

This Macworld CAD industry giant Autodesk announced a series of new products for the Mac. We’ve written briefly about this in earlier reports. In this multi-page report we cover these product announcements in far more detail. We’ll start with what we think is the best new Mac product from Autodesk or at least the one we think is the most fun application: Mudbox 2009.

Autodesk Mudbox 2009 for Mac

In our Autodesk press briefing we spoke with Rob Hoffmann, Senior Product Marketing Manager, 3D, Autodesk Media & Entertainment. If that name sounds familiar to you readers it should, we last spoke with Rob about Maya on the Mac when he was with Alias.

Before we talk about Mudbox 2009 in some detail let’s explain some of its history. Rob stated that Mudbox was originally a Weta Digital in-house tool created for the Lord of the Rings films. The New Zealand digital visual effects company is well known for some other in-house proprietary software, perhaps the best known of which is MASSIVE.

Mudbox then went out of house to a company (Skymatter) that was subsequently acquired by Autodesk. Autodesk unveiled Mudbox 2009 at SIGGRAPH in the summer of 2008. During SIGGRAPH only the Windows versions were announced but Mac development was underway.

Autodesk Mudbox 2009 - Native on the Mac.

As can be seen above Autodesk Mudbox 2009 is a real native Mac OS X application. The product was demoed for us on the Mac (see lower photos) and looks and runs fantastic.

Mudbox 2009 is a digital sculpting program, which includes a toolset that the company describes as having “tools for extreme detailing of digital characters and objects.” Rob Hoffmann said its strength is in its extremely dense tessellation capabilities.

Autodesk Mudbox 2009.

Mudbox strength lies in its intuitive user-interface combining sophisticated and powerful tools for creating the most highly detailed 3D models imaginable. Optimized for performance Mudbox 2009 can maintain great model interactivity while working on very high-resolution meshes, including those with tens of millions of polygons across the entire mesh.

Mudbox 2009 includes rendering technologies that leverage the power of the OpenGL application programming interface (API) on today’s powerful graphics cards. The software offers an accurate, on-target environment for real-time evaluation as the digital model is manipulated by the artist, greatly improving interactivity for directors and client presentations.

Autodesk Mudbox 2009 - Use of Stencils.

Dan Platt, modeler at Disney Animation Studios, said, “Time is money. An Autodesk Mudbox session begins with its artist-friendly, intuitive interface. This is sculpting at the speed of thought with the greatest of fidelity. In a business where new ideas with impossible deadlines are commonplace, Mudbox never lets me down.”

Autodesk Meeting: Autodesk Mudbox 2009 Mac.

The image above and below were snapped on an iPhone during our Autodesk press briefing, the day before the Macworld Expo keynote. Mudbox 2009 Mac was running very smoothly on a Mac Pro workstation machine.

Autodesk Meeting: Autodesk Mudbox 2009 Mac.

As you can see from the images the interface is fairly clean and straight-forward. Texturing painting starts with a more basic shape and through a series of manipulative 3D brushes an artist can alter the model further into increasing degrees of resolution.

Autodesk Mudbox 2009 for Mac will be available, like the other new Mac products announced by Autodesk, within 60-90 days from Macworld Expo. Architosh will be sure to post news on their eventual availability.

Architosh's Macworld Conference and Expo 2009 San Francisco Photo Galleries Begin with This Series on Apple's Booth Area.

Anyone who has ever attended a computer conference and exposition knows that the expo floor is where all the great action is. The energy is palpable. At Macworld Expo that energy is concentrated around Apple’s tremendously large booth space, a giant blacked-out zone with a huge theater space in the middle. In shows past they have even used two side theaters to showcase different items. It must take a team of 20 people or more to put the Apple booths together. No small expense for sure.

Apple's iMacs showcase the new iLife 09 software suite. Users were particularly impressed with the new iPhoto 09 and its beautiful Facebook integration.

Since the heart of Schiller’s announcements were the new iLife ‘09 product suite, a series of iMacs loaded with the “digital life-style” suite were a popular draw as folks concentrated on monitors showcasing how iPhoto ‘09, for instance, can dovetail beautifully with Facebook’s photo gallery feature.

The new iLife 09 product suite included a new iMovie.

While iPhoto ‘09 got a lot of attention during the keynote it was also iMovie ‘09 that garnered much praise from experienced users, such as our own Britney H.R., who as a film student at Art Center College of Design, was keenly aware of the mistakes Apple made in the previous version of iMovie. Apple made up for those mistakes in this new release by putting back all the features they took out of the last version. A full re-write of iMovie has now taken place twice in its life time.

The mice ears were being handed out at Microsoft

Mice ears were handed out at Macworld this year at Microsoft’s booth. I didn’t spend much time there so I’m not sure why. As you can see a few of the ears can be spotted in the photo above as attendees watched demonstrations of Apple’s new iWork ‘09 application suite.

As always Apple's booth was a standing room only affair.

Apple’s booth is always the center of attention at Macworld, which is why it is hard to conceive of the show without Apple attending it. The rumor yesterda was that Apple wants to skip Macworld next year — and possibly all years after — so that it can become the new darlying of the big CES (consumer electronics show) in Las Vegas which takes place the same week every year.

AppleInsider reports that Apple has already signed a deal and is bringing some of its biggest developers to the Las Vegas show with them. When one thinks of the logic in such a move there is inevitable upside to it: direct product comparison with Microsoft; direct product comparison with RIM (Blackberry folks), Nokia and Palm in the smartphone race against the iPhone; and direct product comparison in the “digital life-style” software space where Apple is leaps and bounds ahead of Microsoft and everyone else. What other product out there has the sophistication and ease of use of Apple’s iPhoto or iMovie yet dovetails so beautifully with Internet social net darling Facebook and Flickr? The answer is nobody.

We will be reviewing iLife ‘09 this quarter to show you why this product is so outstanding.

Architosh's Macworld Expo San Francisco 2009 Coverage - Our reports will include numerous photo galleries from the show floor plus activities and visits. Look for future reports to go indepth with Autodesk's Mac announcements plus some extra features.

Updated Summary of Coverage [12 Feb 2009 - AFR]

We wanted to update our Macworld Expo coverage. Aside from a show floor gallery series which kicks off here in this article, we have three “Details” reports filed under Autodesk’s announcements at the show. Our Details reports are 1, 2 and 3 here, dealing with the three new Autodesk Mac products: Mudbox, Toxik and Stitcher. We also have two “Notes” reports focused on solidThinking and one focused on Smith Micro and its growing Mac 3D software portfolio.

We also have a report on Autodesk’s MotionBuilder, a much overlooked but important item. And in addition to our two page report on our meeting with Autodesk, we also have our Final Notes and the Misc. article on Macworld.

While Steve Jobs was not the keynote speaker this year at the annual all-things-Apple event, Phil Schiller did an excellent job with his keynote nonetheless. Too bad he didn’t have truly stunning announcements, it could have given us a sense of a possible future without the grand master. I think in all honesty Apple’s keynotes depend far more on the Apple products that are announced (both hardware and software) than they do on Steve Jobs introducing them. This is a reality that the public, the press and the Wall Street analysts need to get used to.

Show More Popular Than Ever

This was by far the most crowded Macworld Expo I have attended in San Francisco. Not only did most of the North Hall get filled with booths (the South Hall is where Apple is located and is always filled to completion) but the general crowd levels were particularly high. It was hard to walk around at times.

Apple's booth still drew large crowds. Here show participants check out Apple's new iLife 09 suite - including the great new Facebook integration features built into iPhoto 09.

Apple’s booth was showcasing their new software products centered on the iLife 09 suite. The key new updates focus on iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband. The latter in particular introduces musical instruction led by some of the world’s greatest living musical stars (like Sting and Sarah McLachlan).

iPhoto now includes Google maps integration and superb integration with Facebook and Flickr. The ability to bring back tagged people from Facebook down to iPhoto is awesome, plus the general synchronization of edited photos between the two makes iPhoto the best tool for your general Facebook photo needs.

Apple's booth is the heart of the Expo floor.

Apple introduced a new iWork 09 suite. This included a new Numbers with far more Excel-like features to make it a truly useful spreadsheet application. Still, unlike Excel or other spreadsheets, Numbers continues to focus on getting useful numerical data into your Pages documents and Keynote presentations. We’ll cover this suite in more detail in the rest of our Macworld coverage reports. Keynote gets updated with even more features and templates as does Pages.

CAD and 3D at Macworld

It turns out this was a pretty good show for CAD and 3D. It would have been an amazing show if the old standbys like Graphisoft, Nemetschek NA, and auto-des-sys, Inc., also came to the show.

solidThinking made a big splash at Macworld Expo.

The solidThinking booth was one of the bright spots at the show for CAD and 3D. Their large booth was showing the latest version of the CAID (computer-aided industrial design) software running on some of the latest Apple Mac hardware.

At the show I got a chance to see the application in action for the very first time. We also had a small meeting at the show and discussed numerous things from the CAD and CAID market and its evolution to how entertainment products are crossing over to the engineering and product design world.

We have many more booth photos to show and will be rolling out Macworld Expo SF 2009 reports all week long and into next week, plus a few general photos from my extended trip to California during the holidays.

Autodesk introduces five new native Mac OS X products for design and visualization serving creative markets.

Autodesk today at Macworld Expo announced the availability of five native Mac OS X software products, signaling a dramatic change in Mac adoption with the creative and technical design markets for which it serves.

“We’re thrilled that Autodesk is expanding its Mac 2D and 3D software offerings for our creative professionals.” said Ron Okamoto, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations.

Available Mac Products

While some products were previously announced for the Mac today Autodesk is unveiling Mac OS X support for Autodesk Mudbox 2009, Autodesk Toxik 2009, and Autodesk ImageModeler 2009 for the first time. Additional Mac products coming from Autodesk’s Media & Entertainment software division include Autodesk Maya 2009 and Autodesk Stitcher 2009.

Outside of the M&E division Autodesk makes a few other native Mac OS X products, most notably Autodesk SketchBook Pro (a product formerly belonging to Alias) and Autodesk MotionBuilder 2008 (edit. note: the 2008 version is one version behind but available for Mac users to purchase, future versions for the Mac are in the works).

Autodesk makes a big splash at Macworld SF 2009 - Introduces Five New Native Mac OS X Applications

“Given the growing adoption of Mac OS X and the production requirements of the Mac community, we’re excited to offer these premiere creative tools to Mac artists,” said Stig Gruman, Digital Entertainment Group vice president of Autodesk Media & Entertainment. “Autodesk’s product offerings will empower artistic vision and provide Mac users with the tools to bring their creative ideas to life.”

As noted in this story yesterday, Autodesk’s announcements for Mac OS X signal a surging trend in Mac adoption and demand for Mac products from the world’s largest software developer of design software. With this major announcement, Autodesk is clearly signaling that it intends to fully meet that demand from its growing customers who prefer to work on Apple’s UNIX-based Mac OS X operating system. And this is a very exciting thing.

Architosh's Live Keynote Coverage.

We are inside the keynote hall and it is one minute before 9am. The wifi is sketchy in here but we will attempt our best to cover the show.

Live Keynote

9am – Live music and people sitting…

9:04 – the music continues but the lights are dimming…

9:05 – Phil takes the stage to huge applause…phil is showing the latest Apple stores around the world and how wonderful they are. A glowing a commendation about Apple’s stores. 3.4 million visitors per week in Apple Stores around the world, far more contact with Apple than Macworld Expos, Phil says.

Phil says the Mac has had a resurgence and contact with the customers that is huge.

Last fiscal year we sold 9.7 million Macs by growing more than twice as fast as the rest of the industry. I am paraphrasing Phil for the most part.

Phil says there are three new things today. iLife ‘09 is the first thing. People buy Macs because of iLife Phil says. So what is new?

Thing 1 – Brand new version of iPhoto in iLife 09.

9:08 – Phil is talking about Events in the past version but they are introducing Faces. This will work somewhat like Facebook. Using Face Detection. iPhoto will learn how to recognize faces. iPhoto asks to confirm faces by confirming to the engine what a person looks like. Next iPhoto adds Places. It uses GPS geotagging and these new GPS chips are found in cameras and cell phones which will embed the geotag to the photo file.

What about older photos? Well iPhoto can now add event location data to older photos taken without a camera or phone with a geotagging capability. The maps looks beautiful. iPhoto 09 gets its maps from Google Maps and uses satellite views as well. Crowd loves it!

iPhoto has both new Facebook and Flicr support. The Facebook support is amazing as you can tag people in iPhoto 09 for Facebook and sync to Facebook, if someone completes info up on Facebook because they know the names of folks you don’t, that’s good too because that info comes down to iPhoto automatically.

Phil is showing amazing new animation capabilities for slide shows. And new Photobooks now have maps that come in automatically. Pretty sweet stuff going on here!

9:22 – Phil is demoing iPhoto 09 and the face recognition technology! And then Maps. This is really a great upgrade!

9:29 – Phil is introducing the new iMovie 09…Now you can create 2D and 3D maps of your travels to include in your movie.

Randy Ubillos, chief architect of iMovie is now showing iMovie 09. The new interface is more pro like. Has fantastic new audio editing capabilities built right in. iMovie 09 has some new UI (user interface) technology where there is animation of the changes in UI configuration. The lower section is completely different than previous version but still very accessible.

The crowd is clapping about some amazing new video stabilization technology. The UI is unfolding with new HUD (head’s up display), the new iMovie does realtime rendering and realtime image stabilization all simultaneously.

Garageband introduces some amazing new technology for learning how to play music. The new lessons are truly cool and feature Grammy Award winning artists. And then you can buy and download future lessons.

The Second Thing – iWork 09

9:50 – Phil going over new Keynote in new iWork. New chart animations and brand new themes for keynote. There is a new Keynote Remote application that enables your iPhone to setup Keynote to use as your iPhone as a remote control. It is really amazing! The new Pages has dynamic linking between data in Numbers and Pages. MathType and EndNote is now supported. There are several new dozen new templates for flyers, newsletters, certificates, etc.

Phil is now talking about Numbers. This year Numbers is a more powerful filled out spreadsheet.

New product called an Mac Box Set, includes Leopard, iLife and iWork.

Phil is talking about iWork.com. This is a new service from Apple that enables you to share your iWork documents with others so they can both view them, annotate them and use them for collaboration. iWork is really a online collaboration environment that looks like iWork inside a browser. It is the beginning of a new service, starting out in beta form and customers can help Apple tune it and make it the way Apple customers want it.

The Third Thing – New 17 inch MacBook Pro

10:11 – Phil is talking about the glowing reviews on the new 13 and 15 inch MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The new 17 inch MacBook Pro is the world’s thinnest and lightest in its size class.

New anti-glare option because pro users don’t want the glare sometimes. ExpressCard 34 support. The new glass track pad is now 40 percent larger. You can program it and it supports all the latest new touch gestures. Up to 8 GBs of memory. Both GeForce card options (integrated and extra chip).

The most innovative and greatest new feature is the new battery. Phil is now running a video where the Apple engineers explain their innovation. The new Apple battery can last 8 hours on a single charge. And it can be charged over 1000 times. The battery is 40 percent larger. Apple has its own engineers and scientist specializing in research on batteries. Customizing new battery technologies to form batteries that are more space efficient. Apple is clearly developing innovative new batteries….

Could Apple be working on battery technologies for Green Tech?

Architosh said more than a year ago that Apple’s new product line emerging in the future is all about Green Design or Energy.

Apple is always looking to make its products greener.

10:20 – Video is ending….crowd is clapping enthusiastically about Apple’s new advanced new battery technology.

Phil is getting near the close. Talking up Apple’s greeness…

solidThinking to provide free software to industrial design, architecture and fine arts college and university students at Macworld Expo.

Leading industrial design/styling software company solidThinking announced yesterday that they will be releasing a free personal-use version of its solidThinking 7.6 CAID (computer-aided industrial design) software to ID (industrial design), architectural and fine arts students who visit solidThinking’s booth (#3320).

Those enrolled in certified programs at colleges and universities can obtain a certificate at the Macworld solidThinking booth. Valid proof of student status must be presented. The validated certificate can then be used to download the free solidThinking software and run it on the student’s personal computer.

“Industrial designers globally are adopting solidThinking as their tool of choice, and today’s design students should have the opportunity to use, understand and become fluent in the best available software to expand their creative abilities,” says solidThinking Vice President of Product Strategy and Marketing.

“By making solidThinking available to students for convenient use on their own computers,” says Mazzardo, “we anticipate these students will become even more attractive to employers upon graduation by giving them more time to improve their creativity and develop a portfolio of their creative work.”

Macworld Expo San Francisco - We take a look at this year's participants serving the Mac CAD/3D and graphics professional market segments.

This year looks to be possibly the last year Architosh will cover the fabled Mac platform conference and exhibition. Sad to believe but Apple has reported that the company no longer has interest in the show, held annually at the San Francisco Moscone Center.

Over the years the show has both grown and evolved. Once just a Macintosh show, since the wild success of Apple’s iPod line the convention has become partly centered on the iPod accessories market. Now with the popular iPhone and its attendant software platform, this year Mac software makers will have to share even more show room floor space with a new group of iPhone market developers and providers.

Resurgence With No Show

It simply doesn’t make sense to see Apple express no future interest in Macworld Expo within the context of Apple’s burgeoning market share growth. This only makes sense if the company wishes to wrestle away control of the show from IDG or if Apple sees the show as not worth attending without a Steve Jobs keynote — of which we will live without this year.

While many are wondering if Steve Jobs is actually healthy or ill and how that might be affecting Apple’s dramatic announcements concerning this year’s Macworld and the future, a very probable reason is that Apple simply wants to control such future events, possibly creating an iPhone/iPod show specifically for those tied-together markets. Such a division has been expressed as beneficial to Mac software makers who feel the current show does not focus enough on the Mac computer platform.

Macworld and CAD/3D

Regardless of what is happening now and in the future this year’s Macworld Expo will see a slight drop in interest from CAD and 3D software vendors — despite the actual increase in such developers to the Mac platform.

While CAD stalwarts like Graphisoft (ArchiCAD) and Nemetschek North America (Vectorworks) will not be at the show, and haven’t been in a few years, there will still be sizable companies in these important vertical markets. However, it should be noted that these companies particularly serve consumer or prosumer segments of the CAD/3D markets. However, there are exceptions.

Most notably we will see solidThinking, Inc. as the significant big player at this year’s show. solidThinking Inc., is now a subsidiary of Altair Engineering, a significant CAD/CAE company serving the engineering market. And while not in a booth, CAD industry software giant Autodesk, Inc., will be showing their growing Mac 3D software portfolio at a nearby hotel during the conference. It is too bad that company didn’t have a booth. Also missing is Adobe this year, a major disappointment for this year’s Macworld.

Other attendees in the Mac CAD/3D software category include:

IMSI/Design – makers of the venerable TurboCAD product line. The company has several versions of TurboCAD plus two 3D rendering products that work with Google’s SketchUp. (booth #2526)

Google / SketchUp – Speaking of the popular modeler, Google will be at Macworld this year in smaller booth we hear showing both SketchUp 7, SketchUp Pro 7, LayOut 2 and Google Earth and 3D Warehouse products and services. (booth #802)

BeLight Software – makers of Live Interior 3D. (booth #337)

Lemke Software GmbH – makers of CADintosh and Graphic Converter, this is the first time we have seen this German company at MWSF. (booth #3526)

Microspot Limited – The venerable Mac CAD company from the United Kingdom will be showing its solid product line spearheaded with MacDraft Pro, MacDraft SE, and Microspot Interiors among others. (booth #2621)

Punch Software – this growing company will be showing its ViaCAD and Shark FX product line of consumer and professional Mac 3D CAD software. (booth #3526)

Smith Micro will be at Macworld but is unclear to us if the company will be showing its growing line up of old and new 3D software programs such as: Poser, Shade, Amapi and Morpheus Animation Studio. We will be clearly on the look out….(booth #1235)

solidThinking – we’ve already discussed above, the sophisticated and powerful CAID program will be showcased in booth #3320.

Of course we will be looking closely at these following companies as well due to their direct relationship to CAD/3D and graphics professionals:

AEC Software – FastTrack Schedule. (booth #1743)

Ambrosia Software – Snapz Pro X – a very good screen animation capture utility we use internally at Architosh. (booth #420)

Axiotron – makers of the ModBook. (booth #502)

EazyDraw – booth #301

FileMaker Inc. – booth #1225

HP – makers of large format plotters, booth #1502

Kerio – makers of Kerio email and groupware server. (booth #1843)

LaCie – booth #2332

Parallels – makers of Parallel Desktop for Mac, the leading hypervisor virtualization software for the Mac. The product allows the running of key Windows CAD/3D and engineering applications on your Mac. (booth #2138)

RapidMind – booth #3534

Sassafras Server Inc. – booth #3525

VMware, Inc. – makers of Fusion, the other leading hypervisor virtualization software for the Mac. (booth #2202)

Wazabee 3D – booth #4119
