Architosh request for Unix apps for OS X: Results Summary

As noted in our previous story, Architosh assisted in a request for Unix candidates for Mac OS X ports. In that story we requested that those in the sci/tech community send in lists of strictly Unix applications (that may or may not have had Mac versions in the past) for Mac OS X ports. We gathered several hundred emails quite quickly from scientists, doctors, engineers and technologists around the world. Here are the results of that effort.

Understanding the Table

The following HTML table includes the results of applications. They have a status code as follows:

H - Heritage. Runs under Mac OS 7/8. Development slowed or ceased.
C - Current. Runs under Mac OS 9. Development continues
X - Announced for Mac OS X.
D - In Development (for OS X)
XS - Runs currently under Mac OS X Server

Listing of Apps with Vote Count: [A-D] [E-H] [N-Z]

The following tables list all applications which were voted for by readers and contained at least one vote. Please note, some big-time items like MatLab, Autocad, MathCAD and others are not listed, having been voted for up to hundreds of times. These significant applications for the Mac platform are clearly on the front burner and in a class by themselves. However, bear in mind that that doesn't guarantee they will exist on the Mac OS X platform in the future. The best way to raise the chance of a particular application coming to Mac OS X is to contact the developer yourself and state your case. To see the status of a particular application view the HTML table (see above).
