Mac3D News Around the Web: Electric Image, et al.

According to a story at MacWEEK Electric Image has announced a management buyout from Play Industries, leaving Electric Image as an independent company led by chairman and CEO Dwight Parscale. The company was purchased by Play approximately two years ago.

The long awaited release of Electric Image Animation System (EIAS) is imminent in the form of a beta, according to Parscale. When the final updated version of EIAS is completed and set for final shipment Mac users will have a fully Carbon-compliant version to run under OS X. Go to MacWEEK to read the full story.

The highly anticipated RADEON chip by ATI is now shipping as a BTO (build-to-order) option at the Apple Store. Unlike the 3dfx Voodoo 4 and 5 chips the RADEON supports Apple's DVD-ROM drive for watching DVD movies. At the time of Macworld in July, 3dfx said they would be working on software support for Apple's DVD-ROM drives, which may now be available.

At Macworld ATI was showing off the new RADEON chip in a private room to industry insiders and fans of their products. At that time we saw the new RADEON running on a new dual G4 Power Mac with a 22" Cinema Display running a feature film (Gattica?) and the quality was totally amazing. Go to 500 MHz Power Mac G4 now at the Apple Store to get your RADEON-equiped G4.

MacCentral has two interesting articles today. One concerns Tech Data's new deal with Apple to provide Apple Financial Services lease programs for leasing equipment to professionals. And Britannica.com will be supplying a Sherlock 2 plug-in. That's good news for research-oriented technical professionals.
