Architosh: Mac 3D/CAD Roundup - Jun 2000

5 Jul 00

In this first of a new series of roundup articles on Macintosh 3D and CAD we cover all of the news for the month of Jun (2000), which you may have missed, both at Architosh and around the Web.

June 2000: Mac 3D/CAD News

The highlight of the month was continued news coverage of the announcement of Alias/Wavefront's Maya for Mac OS X, coming early next year. MacWEEK's WWDC coverage article discusses Richard Kerris's announcement and background at Electric Image. This article is a good read and forecast on what's coming up in Mac 3D.

The other big highlight of June was Diehl Graphsoft's announcement that they would become Nemetschek North America, as continued acquisition/merger functions led meaning to this name change. The number one Mac CAD developer will now have deeper pockets from which to draw from and a worldwide user base for its ongoing cross-platform development of VectorWorks.

A much overlooked article at Architosh discusses who is already testing (using) Maya for OS X on early beta builds of Mac OS X. While Pixar and Disney should not surprise you (if indeed they are already using it?) how does Boeing sound? And the US Air Force? Additionally we have more scoop on this and ProE for Mac OS X as well, coming soon.

And our collaborative effort with other sites for an Autocad for OS X petition effort has led to over 900 signatures, all wanting some form of Autocad for OS X. Click here to take the petition now.

Other Key Architosh News for June include:

Additionally there were a number of great, exciting stories around the Web affecting the future Macintosh 3D/CAD market. And this news is hot! The hottest being the very new news about Nvidia introducing the Mac GeForce2 MX chipset. MacCentral has the full story. Additionally, Bryan Speece of 3dfx, Nvidia's main competitor, responded with comments about the Nvidia announcement. In short this all adds up to heated competition between two very equal forces in the graphics arena.
