New Macintosh database program: simple, syncs with Palm and free!
While surfing the web for FileMaker Pro database utilities for the Palm OS, we discovered a new Macintosh application called MyND, by Softplum (software from plum island). MyND stands for "My Nifty Database" and was written to fill the hole in the Mac market for simple and cheap database software. What about AppleWorks 6's database? Well, I guess this developer thought the price of AppleWorks (US$79) was too high. Who knows? But unlike the database in AppleWorks, which is related to FileMaker, MyND supports importing and exporting to popular Palm OS PDA's, including Visors. The program is up to speed with the Mac OS as well, claiming to be OS 9 savvy? And not only is it easy to use, but it's FREE! Everyone's favorite price (until we figure out the competition has disappeared). MyND supports the JFile database format popular on Palm OS computers, in addition to MobileDB. If you have a Palm OS handheld, a Mac and no FileMaker or other database and are looking for a simple and low-cost solution, MyND may be for you. Other Softplum Software IdeaKeeper: A Browser for Your Brain. That's the catch phrase to this wonderful new shareware pick featured recently by BusinessWEEK Online. The program has garnered rave reviews from many leading magazines and ezines. And because it is shareware you get to try it out without shedding a penny. IdeaKeeper does sophisticated outlining, has hypertext support to create nonlinear dynamically linked document sets, extensive Drag & Drop support, text formatting, embedded objects, stickies, multi-window capabilities and style templates. It can even remind you of important dates and times and dial your phone for you. Also, you can create multimedia, standalone documents for distribution. Sound too good to be true? An architect's dream app? The creative's creative word processor/organizer? Sounds like it. So much so that Architosh just has to check out this program's goods. But in the meantime, go download it yourself and tell us what you think.
