MacCAD News: Diehl Graphsoft to become Nemetschek North America

7 Jun 00

In news that is not entirely surprising, Diehl Graphsoft Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Munich, Germany based software developer, Nemetschek AG, announced yesterday they would unite to form Nemetschek North America. Diehl Graphsoft, the developer of the award-winning MiniCAD VectorWorks CAD programs and the number one Macintosh CAD developer, had earlier this year merged with Germany's Nemetschek AG, in what was perceived as a surprise move by the Columbia, Maryland-based company.

At that time of the merger many Macintosh-based VectorWorks users saw a concern in merging with a Windows-only developer based in Germany, but later after an article citing Richard Diehl, CEO of Diehl Graphsoft, that concern was put to rest.

Nemetschek North America will be a Cross-Platform Developer

According to the press release, Nemetschek N. A. (North America), will continue to develop and support both the Macintosh and Windows operating systems in its product lines. From the press release:

"Company officials report that VectorWorks will be positioned as Nemetschek N.A.'s flagship CAD platform in Asia, and North and South America. The product will continue to be marketed in Europe as a midrange CAD alternative to Nemetschek AG's AllPlan CAD software. The company plans to continue to support both Mac and Windows operating systems in its product offerings."

Nemetschek North America's Organization and Markets

The recent merger of Diehl Graphsoft Inc. with Nemetschek AG of Munich, Germany, has given rise to a new corporate entity in the CAD software market, Nemetschek North American (NA). Nemetschek NA will operate as a subsidiary of Nemetschek, AG and, along with its business partners in Asia and Latin America, will develop and market products and services to professionals in North and South America and the Pacific Rim countries.

"The size and diversity of the companies in the Nemetschek network allow us to immediately build upon the leadership position we've established in the global CAD market." -- Richard Diehl, CEO of Nemetschek NA

Former Diehl Graphsoft CEO, Richard Diehl, will serve as CEO of Nemetschek NA, and the company will relocate its operations from the former Diehl Graphsoft headquarters in Columbia Maryland to a new, larger facility there by year-end.

More than a Name Change

For Richard Diehl: "Establishing Nemetschek North America represents far more than a mere name change from Diehl Graphsoft," explains Diehl. "Our business strategy is focused on global market leadership. That agenda will involve development of new products, entrance into new markets and expansion into service areas weÕve historically not considered as viable options," he said.

"Nemetschek AG's global financial strength and its leadership position in European design markets, alongside Diehl Graphsoft's historic strong presence in North America and other international markets, especially Japan, positions Nemetschek North America to benefit positively from the synergies of their respective strengths," he added.

As Nemetschek AG's largest US subsidiary, Nemetschek NA joins the parent companyÕs network of more than 40 branches and subsidiaries throughout Europe.

"The size and diversity of the companies in the Nemetschek network allow us to immediately build upon the leadership position weÕve established in the global CAD market," Diehl stated. "Adding to that outlook is the benefit of our enhanced technological and financial base. This aspect will lend us a high degree of flexibility for research, development and expansion into new business areas," he concluded.

Nemetschek AG, founded as a consulting firm in 1963 by civil engineer, Professor Georg Nemetschek, is one of the largest architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) software vendors in the world, with annual revenues exceeding US $120 million (245 million DEM). Diehl Graphsoft has been publicly traded since 1995, is a leading international developer of CAD software and has designed CAD software for the personal computer since 1985. Its flagship product, VectorWorks, is the best-selling CAD software on the Macintosh platform and has a growing presence in the Windows market.
