SGI announces Next-Generation graphics for 'Onyx2'
On the very high-end 3D front, SGI (Silicon Graphics Inc.), announced their improved next generation graphics for Onyx2 'workstations'. The "InfiniteReality3" (TM) graphics engine for the new Silicon Graphics Onyx2 workstations provides the latest leading edge capabilities for image quality and realism -- ideal for 3D modeling, animation and simulation, as well as oil and gas, manufacturing and entertainment markets. These high-end workstations are used by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Flight Control, in Dallas, for defense industry and aerospace clients. In addition, the Onyx line of workstations are used in the special effects industry for modeling and animation. For AEC clients or modeling consultants these expensive workstations have limited use in these markets. Yet a growing interest in 3D modeling and advanced visualization in AEC may prompt some AEC pros to consider at least one high-end UNIX workstation for specific visualization tasks. SGI's Visual Computing Workstations SGI designs and manufactures UNIX/Irix workstations as well as lower end Microsoft Windows NT workstations -- for these advanced markets. To learn more about SGI visual workstations choose a topic below:
The SGI UNIX workstations run SGI's Irix 6.5 OS software. Irix 6.5 is a mature 64-bit UNIX operating system which complies with every open industry UNIX standard, including POSIX, UNIX SVR4, X11, Y2K, and Motif. In addition the OS provides OpenGL Run-Time libraries. Connectivity support in Irix 6.5 includes NFS, ISDN/PPP support, Novell NetWare Client, Xinet AppleTalk, and Samba. All of this means a SGI Irix workstation can fit in naturally with your Macintosh and PC environment. Irix supports various software formats including QuickTime, Cinepak, JPEG, MPEG 1, AVI, Tooltalk, Display PostScript, FIPS 151.2 and Motif 1.2.4. These workstations ship with bundled software for communications as well as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Netscape Communicator 4.05, SGI Meeting, Info Search, Cosmo Player an Cosmo Create, to name just a few. Bundled with every Silicon Graphics workstation are six CD-ROMs loaded with tools for management and connectivity with Macintosh and UNIX environments.
