reView: VectorWorks ARCHITECT - Part 1: Introduction and Setup
Part 2: Tools for Space Planning and Programming In part 2 we look at ARCHITECT's programming tools which really strive to help the architect setup and determine "spatial criteria" as it relates to planning. Certain of these tools help this process along by way of harnessing the computer's processing power, enabling self-generation and modification of bubble diagrams and so forth. To set up this process you open a blank document or any document that is already created. You don't need to carry on this programming process within the document that the ARCHITECT Assistant created for us last week (that is optional). We chose a new document. In this dialog box you name your project and determine the number of spaces (program elements or rooms/areas) in your building project. Clicking Ok takes you to the screen below which facilitates directions (guidance) on working with the Worksheet VectorWorks ARCHITECT is going to generate for you. Pull down menus explain each facet of the worksheet process.
After all this process is complete ARCHITECT generates the appropriately sized programming worksheet. See below (click on the image to see it larger). We have taken our BritasMedia new offices program and completed the chart, complete with adjacency matrix values -- shown at right -- that allow the program to setup automatic bubble diagramming diagrams for us. Each room in the 'architectural program' has four cells in the worksheet. The top left being the room name, to its right the area value (per units), and below that what floor it is on. Under the name is where you determine the colors and patterns used to draw that element on the bubble diagram. ARCHITECT does this drawing for you based on the parameters set in this worksheet. The worksheet itself is very straight forward to work with. There is an entry edit window up above the main worksheet window. You can move it any where you want on the screen. With the worksheet complete VW ARCHITECT is ready to generate the bubble diagram. Click next to continue.
