Apple's New Small Business Website: A Look at Resources for AEC

28 October 99.

Apple's new Small Business website offers the first evidence, perhaps, that Apple is quietly preparing to address the enterprise and small corporate markets by first addressing the SOHO and vertical market niches (healthcare, law, retail/e-tail, etc.)

What does the new Small Business website have to offer architects, engineers other related design professionals? That's the magic question.

Can Apple Help You Make Money Online Too?

E-commerce is the new catch phrase in business and the golden question for any business is: can an e-commerce business model work for my business?

For AEC and design professional markets it is yet unclear how e-commerce trends affect professions such as architecture, industrial design and engineering. This is largely a principle focus of research at Architosh and when it gets figured out we will be the first to tell you.

Resources for AEC and Related-Design Professionals: Business 101

General Business

One of the better links on the new Apple Small Business website is MyProspects.com, a site designed to help millions of small business Macintosh users solve their number one problem: growing their business. Terri Lonier, best-selling author of Working Solo, named #1 choice for solo entrepreneurs by Inc. Magazine, is featured as well, with direct site links.

Another excellent resource on the site is SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) an association dedicated to aiding in the formation, growth, and success of small businesses nationwide. Go find a seasoned mentor to help your AEC business grow in the new Information Economy! Additional links to Netscape's Netcenter for Small Business resources, The US Small Business Administration website, Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership website and Fast Company, a magazine that covers the new economy.

Financial Resources

A good place to start addressing your small AEC business' financial needs is with a topnotch accounting program! A link to M.Y.O.B Accounting Plus will get you started. There is also Quicken Deluxe2000 for Macintosh and MacAuthorize for small business retailers looking for credit card solutions. Other hot Tech Tools, as Apple calls them, are Simply Postage, a software solution that puts the power of the US post office right in your Mac!

E-commerce Resources

Apple has a much to offer aspiring small businesses willing to take it online. Customer success stories plus links to all the tools will keep you busy for awhile. A good place to start, Pieces of the E-commerce Puzzle. Residential designers and design-build firms will find the resources here to help them sell those new homes and home designs all online, in a secure and pleasing webstore.

Apple has a list of Helpful Tips for those in the planning stages of their e-commerce site. And for those interested in Earthlink's e-commerce solutions there is a link to that as well.

Networking in an Information Economy

Apple has a complete page devoted to Networking the small business. Visit 3Com's Small Business website and learn how to setup that small network in your home office. There are also links to help you understand how to connect that small business network (SB-LAN) to the Internet. Links to the Apple Solution Experts site will help you find just the right person in your area to help you put it all together.

In Closing

Apple's new Small Business website is a good start with excellent links to "best of class" Internet sites to help you learn more about being successful with your small business, whether it's in architecture, engineering or construction. We hope over time Apple can add more disciplinary pages -- the page on Health Sciences should be a model for how to tackle other disciplines using the Mac as well -- and bring the fields of design and construction into this area of the site as well. After all, a major portion of architecture firms, engineering consulting firms, and contractors are small businesses -- in size, revenue and business focus.
