Mac CAD News: Spatial is committed to Macintosh - Special Report
A few days ago Architosh published a news report that detailed the absence of Spatial Technologies' ACIS 5.3 3D Toolkit for the Macintosh while many other non-Windows operating systems were supported. This simply didn't make any sense to us but given its importance as news we released the story prior to confirming the omission of the Mac (we noted that we were awaiting info from Spatial via an email or phone call). Shortly after the report, an Architosh reader informed us of his clarification with Spatial and that the omission of the Mac OS in the list of supported platforms for ACIS 5.3 was a mistake. Spatial "is supporting" the Mac OS in its latest ACIS 5.3 after all. Here is what they told us:
The story we ran apparently caught the eyes of those in Apple's Worldwide Developer Support Group who had this to say when they learned of the situation:
"Thank you for alerting the Mac community and Apple to potential issues with ACIS and Mac support. We're looking into the issue." -- C.K. Haun, Apple Worldwide Developer Technical Support Those are all reassuring words. As rendered in the previous report, if indeed Spatial was dropping Macintosh support the negative effects on the Macintosh in the CAD and 3D market could have been very large -- as some of the key Mac applications used in the 3D and CAD industry rely on Spatial's 3D kernel technologies. Thankfully that is not the case. In fact, we also heard that Spatial will be making a future statement about their company's support of the Macintosh. The nature of this future announcement is not known at this time but it is assumed to be positive for the Mac platform -- which is why they told this to one of our readers. Once more, Apple is confirming to us that they will look into the issues.
Spatial Technologies is a key software provider for Apple due to its underlying technologies that provide 3D modeling geometry engines for CAD and modeling applications. You are encouraged to write to both Apple and your Mac CAD software developer to express your concerns for continued support. With Macintosh Spatial tools in hand Macintosh programmers can provide cutting edge, industry-leading cross-platform Macintosh versions of 3D and CAD/CAM software.
