PowerBook G3's Win at CAD Shootout!

1 June 99.

Apple's PowerBook G3's were winners in the 1999 CAD Cup Shootout, held last week at A/E/C Systems, in Los Angeles. MacInTouch has a story that announces that Mac-first CAD applications ArchiCAD and MiniCAD VectorWorks took first and third place, respectively, for Best Overall Architectural CAD Application.

According to the story, both of those CAD teams used at least one PowerBook (teams use two computers) , while the MiniCAD VectorWorks team used PowerBook G3's, exclusively, to compete in the event. The PowerBooks used on the VectorWorks team were not only able to compete against other CAD teams using the latest and fastest Intel Pentium III's running at 500 MHz, but were older models as well ( a 292 MHz and 266 MHz PB G3). A true testament to the speed of the G3 chip used in all of Apple's computers!

"Having Apple's award-winning PowerBook G3's utilized in an intense event like this, against heavy Intel iron, is a true testament to the raw power and ease-use of Apple's Macintosh operating system and the hardware that runs it."

The CAD Cup Shootout is a three hour architectural design competition that pits different architect teams, representing a particular CAD software package, against each other while being judged by CAD industry experts and a very large live audience. The three man teams race to produce the best design while completing all of the required drawings, renderings and animation's. Essentially each architect team -- using a particular CAD software package -- is challenged to demonstrate the power, ease-of-use, and features of the software package they represent. Teams are free to run their CAD software on any hardware available for that application.

The MacInTouch article goes on further to discuss the fact that ArchiCAD and MiniCAD VectorWorks are Mac-first applications that have now gone cross-platform in an industry that is heavily Wintel. Having Apple's award-winning PowerBook G3's utilized in an intense event like this, against heavy Intel iron, is a true testament to the raw power and ease-use of Apple's Macintosh operating system and the hardware that runs it. Furthermore, two of the winning application teams, ArchiCAD and VectorWorks, utilized the Mac OS on Apple hardware, which is an excellent demonstration to the heavily Intel-based AEC industry that Apple's Mac OS and Macintosh hardware are excellent alternatives to Wintel.
