ArchiCAD Team Wins 1999 Architectural CADD Cup in Shootout!
The results are in and the ArchiCAD team won the 1999 CADD Shootout at A/E/C Systems '99. The very popular event was hosted at A/E/C Systems this last week in Los Angeles, California. Second place for Best Overall Architectural CADD went to the ARRIS team, while MiniCAD VectorWorks took third place. The CAD Shootout event -- popularized at the Build Boston show over the last few years -- is the result of shootout organizer Geoffrey Moore Langdon, AIA, of ArchitecturalCADD Consultants, in Massachusetts. The event moved to A/E/C Systems this year for the first time and was one of the expo's highlight events. The structure of the CADD Shootout is simple. Three man teams compete against other teams using a unique CADD software product (which they represent) in an intense three (3) hour design charrette. The nature of the design problem is not known until the start of the event, so there is no way to prepare in any way to get a leg up on your competitors. A live audience watches the event take place -- as teams race to complete all of the many drawing types required to win the event. The ArchiCAD team took first place in the following categories: (1) Floorplans, (2) Renderings, (3) Animation, (4) Overall design, (5) Network Collaboration, (6) Ease of Use, (7) Parametric Functions for Architects, and (8) Vignette Interview C - Parametrics - how well does the software allow for easy design changes. ArchiCAD, and third place winner MiniCAD VectorWorks were Mac-first (Mac only) CAD applications that have gone cross-platform in the last few years. MacInTouch has a story that announced that Macintosh PowerBooks were used by two of the winning teams and that the VectorWorks team used two PowerBooks, exclusively, to compete against the latest Intel hardware.
